    Sad to pull the trigger....

My company is being sold. I've known for a while. Truth be told - I love it there and don't want to leave! But things being what they are these days in the private sector, I'm having a tough time dealing with the uncertainty from day to day on whether or not I will have a job. We recently had a wave of lay-offs. They said it would be the only round but the situation doesn't support this stance.

So I just emailed off my first application...it's for a government job. And now I have a 10 point preferential since I was just approved for partial disability. (that's another reason why I was so happy to get it - the point preferential).

It's really heartbreaking but I gotta do what I gotta do. I may be nuts but I'm sorta thinking the only safe jobs these days are gov't ones.

I do have a few other places in mind. We'll see what happens. It's just been so stressful. I went through something similar with my last company and it sucks to be the walking dead. All I want is something stable where I can work hard, hopefully advance, and retire from.

Yes, I found out years ago that the only "safe job" and "stable" jobs are normally govt. jobs. Chances of being laid off or eliminated are extremely small.

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

Stable jobs : Federal Govt > State Govt > City Govt > Private companies (in that order)

When private companies (banks) fail, they ask US Fed to loan $$, when State/county Govt. (California) filed bankruptcy & diaster recovery, they also ask Fed to help with emergency funds... but...

when Fed fails (if any), then any major banks, and outside Foreign countries' banks would love to lend helping hands to US Fed.

So Fed's jobs NEVER dies! (only RIF, reduction in force)

          Hey there Ms. Minnie!!!

WRONG!!! They are contemplating closing a post office which handles mail for two counties in my area due to, believe it or not "LACK OF MAIL". Manatee & Sarasota counties are by no means small! The news article in the Sarasota Herald said that due to email, less mail has been coming through this post office. Who ever thought they would close a post office? If this closing occurs, it will put a one day delay on all mail coming into these two counties.

I'm afraid that things have changed dramatically. In this economy, even government jobs are no longer "safe/stable." I work for a large county government and my position was eliminated twice already this year. I was fortunate in that after position elimination #2 I was able to secure another position which ended up being a promotion for me. But seniority and my college degree had a lot to do with that. I don't think I would have ended up in the street, but it is quite possible I may have ended up demoted to a lower paying position.

Our State Government is in the same situation and lots of State employees are in the process of being eliminated, then having to "bump" someone else off their jobs, etc. In the end, seniority is the final denominator.

Hate to say, but had I the chance, I'd be applying for gov't jobs right and left. But there's just too much going on with me to spend the time doing it. Plus having had some friends actually let me know what some sections are like, I'm not all that sorry, I'm not employed by the gov't.

Almost every employer has a hiring freeze on right now. Probably only certain sectors like health care (nursing, etc.) are the only ones hiring. Our state has had a hiring freeze in effect for several months.

I worked in the private sector all my life and had no problem until I lost my job due to a huge corporate merger where, as usual, the long-time and highly-paid employees are usually let go first. After that, and since I'm no spring chicken, I applied for a government job and got it, at slightly less than half what I used to make in the private sector.

Working for the government was and still is a total culture shock, and there is no so-called "job security" anymore. I'm grateful though, because the benefits are outstanding, particularly the health and dental insurance package which is still free for the employee.

I shouldn't have spoken about work...Just got nailed this week, embarressing from previous post (See Work, work, work Woohoo work work) looks like production manager found out we're not receiving any more shipments of frames (The part I mold plastic foam around) till next year and we are VERY low on parts...

Luckily for me, had 58 last week, 46 this week. Will make rent and food, but not doing ANYTHING stupid wise (Except for posts where I try and see into future) for awhile..If I do, boy would I hurt...As usual.

This coming week, will be VERY lucky to make 40, then the following 2 weeks will get 16 hrs each week holiday pay, and I doubt much more then that..>Sheesh....I may have to work longer...Oh shut up idiot, you can't know the future..>SLAP!!!
