Debiting an account without prior notice is wrong. Taking out money owed on a safety deposit box is like the credit card company going and taking money out of your account just because you owe them money and they have your account number from prior payments.. Either way-- its wrong.

I would definitely look into it. They took advantage of you being a bank member. It seems to me you are renting to use a box? If you don't pay rent you go to court to get evicted and the landlord sues you for money owed in back rent.
He(landlord) can't just go to your bank and say 'hey' does John Doe have X amount of $$ in his account?
Banks have processes and procedures for dealing with people that don't pay for their box. Call your bank without telling them who you are and ask them what the procedures are for your "mom" not paying on her box. ;o)
In Michigan if you don't pay for the box you get billed for them drilling out the lock and the contents "can" become the property of Department of Treasury.
Call the bank and argue it.. Tell them the call is being recorded ( even if it's not)
