    Save gas, ride a horse

A newsitem from Sacramento, Ca has a 25 year old bank employee who lives just outside the city limits in an agricultural part of the county, riding her horse to work to save on gas.
Ties the horse to a pole, and ties a large sack around the horse's back and a.s, and then empties the sack into the dumpster behind the bank's branch.

    You're welcomed!!

Good news for you, horses are also given FREE... saw ads in some states people give away young horses because... they all BROKE, no $$ left to buy animal feeds, grains, or milk, etc. Horse body became thin & pale, etc.

So search on Craiglists or your local suburbs, fetch new one, bring home, make a pet-bed in your home, and be a patriotic animal companion-lover please! (cow boy)

I would do it if I could. But parking a horse for 9 hrs in a downtown metropolitan area would be cruel & unusual punishment.

I took a motorcycle safety/riding course about 6 mos ago and I'm checking Craigslist and ebay to find a used bike or moped. I'm sick of most of my take home going towards bills and gas. When gas hits $4 a gallon here (presently $3.65/gal) I'm changing something.

Gas here hit 3.98 today, yesterday I paid 3.74. I live in town, no where to have a horse, but if I could figure out a way to have one I would. Getting harder and harder no matter what we do. Milks suppose to hit 4.00 this summer! 2 teenage boys and we can't even afford to keep milk in the fridge. What is this country coming to???

I don't own a horse but horseback riding has always been a favorite hobby of mine. We have friends with horses in north Florida and visit them about twice a year, at which time I ride to my heart's content.

I agree with danaf. "Parking" a horse for more than a couple hours in a metro area would surely constitute animal abuse.

Time to act like the French and buy scooters and electric bikes. I remember seeing pretty classy women pull up on a scooter with a Hermes bag and heels!! I thought at the time, "How cool!!"! However, but if I did that everyone would be talking about me from South Jersey to Brooklyn.
Ive been hoofing it everywhere I can. People still look at you like your crazy and offer you a ride. I'm like, "No, Im doing this for a reason. We Americans need to walk more!" The bonus is I am loosing weight and getting nice calves. Also the crunch has us buying less junk food and more fresh veggies. My kids ate ratatoullie last night, and LIKED it! WOW!

BTW, I had horses, to much poop for the city and burbs.

                    Hi Amislander..
Ive been MIA for some time but its nice to see familiar names here still. Not so nice to see so many new ones..not because they are bad people but its so sad this credit crunch is getting to this point.
I live in a wealthy area..(IM NOT!) and we had a focolsure a few houses down. So sad, a nice older hard working blue collar couple that wanted to live in a safe area.
Most of the folks around me are blissfully unaware of the crunch around them and therefore have not cut down much at all. Still driving hummers and suburbans, shop till you drop and spoiling kids.
Two towns over people cant eat...
Time to invest in public transport!!

I was looking at a picture of Amish, or Mennonites in their little buggy on the highway, and asked a co-worker, well, if they are allowed to have horses and buggies on the freeway, then certainly ANyone can have them. He said, logically, that has to be true. So anywhere an Amish person can use a horse and buggy a non-Amish person can. Right?

I imagine a horse costs alot also and really doesn't save much money. Alot of cycles only get 30-35 mpg, my Civic is doing that. Honda and VW are waitimng for us to resolve some issues with our diesel standards and will introduce the Fit here with the new diesel @ 70 mpg and the 09-10 VW Polo @ 70 mpg and the Blue-Tech jetta @ 60-70 mpg. More practical solutions.

I suppose if you are wearing bonnets on the girls & beards with black hats on the men, then no one would second guess. Usually when I see that they only go on side roads & country roads & in smaller towns. It would be awesome to have horse & buggy, I mean keep the cars too reaching for something better than the oil pollution, but have both & be able to decide what you want to ride.

However you do see horse & buggy in places like New York on the busy streets where people pay to go for a horse & carriage ride. Police still use them, riding horses to enforce the law in different areas & at public events.

I suppose 100 years from now will be a completely different world, but as for advancing or going back to the old ways, I am still not sure what will happen & I will dead so, it wont matter for me.

I live in NY Amish country and we regularly see a horse and buggy going down our road every hour or so. Even in the dead of winter when it's 10 degrees outside. I don't know how they can stand riding it in the winter because they don't have any way to enclose themselves in the buggy to keep warm.

If the Amish want to go into town though which is about 15 miles from here to go to Walmart or the grocery store, they take the bus. I've lived here for 17 years and have never seen a horse and buggy taking the main country road all the way into town and I've never seen horses in town ever.
