$2500 does seem kind of steep, but it might be worth it. Frankly, even though I think you got good advice, I think that if you can swing it, signing up for one or two more free consults with bk attorneys would be a very good idea. Personally, just the fact that I didn't get to talk with an attorney would make me question it, but that's just me, and I freely admit my paranoia. Good luck!!!

Nolo Press book on filing Chapter 7, there are others too. (I have no affiliation with Nolo Press; just a happy customer.) Best wishes to you!

I will be meeting with another attorney this friday to further solidify my options. This attorney is a friend of my employer, with whom I have a very good relationship. Hopefully the price to get help is a lot lower than $2500.
BTW, just checked the balance of the medical bills at the hospital where my wife is admitted and after 36-days, the bill is over $417,000! That doesn't include the cancer treatments which are billed by separate entity. This amount is before my insurance company kicks in, but I can't even pay the deductible....this is depressing. It is likely that my wife will be in the hospital for another month or two and that doesn't include the treatment that she will need to continue after being discharged.Filed: April 2009

You might want to definitely wait on the BK until you find out how much your wife's medical bills are going to be. Some insurance policies have million dollar maximum payouts, and it sounds like you're about halfway there already. You'll want to be able to include as much of the unpaid medical costs as possible in the BK. Good luck and God bless, I really feel for you.Filed CH 13 September 17, 2007

UPDATE:
Medical bills have become more manageable. BK-ed many of the them that we know we won't be requiring their services again. On a payment plan with hospital/physicians that my wife will certainly be needing to continue her ongoing battle vs. breast cancer.
341 went very well. On the road to discharge! And, the $2500 was well worth it! The legal group we are using are extremely helpful, timely and supportive.Filed: April 2009

Out of curiosity (and it is perfectly within your rights if you don't wish to answer the question), did your wife ever say what happened as far as a reason to open the CC acounts and all the past due items?
I'm asking because this all sounds really familiar to me, like my mother. In her case she had an early onset of Alzheimer's disease and became kind of obsessed with amassing money or the means of getting things (along with a shopping obsession).
I'm just sharing this because I can sympathize with you - I was disappointed and somewhat angry with her for making poor decisions and it turned out to be beyond her control. Since she's been diagnosed, I have also found out that the disease can appear as early as the 30s if there is a family history.
Just wanted to throw that out there in case she hasn't said what happened, because if it is something like Alzheimer's or a similar dementia, she won't ever be able to tell you - she won't know herself.
I hope she is getting better and keeps up the fight. You too. Financially, better days will come. Take care.Filed Chap 7 on 3/6/2009
