I don't think it matters unless you are going for some kind of clearance.

thanks for info. i was curious because i heard that if you wanted to be a police officer, a bk would hugely diminish your chances; just wondering if it would apply for armed forces

Yes, they will. I know someone who filed BK and joined the army.

Depending on what you want to go into some of the jobs have awfully nice sign on bonuses as well.

Yes. An instant $20,000 cool bonus for grab on late news!!!... Even in military, soldiers still get into new family debts, borrowing payday loans & filing BK is not unheard of.... and army will NOT fire, discipline, or discharge any soldier in debt because their new/fresh bloods are desperately needed more & more in Iraq everyday! ... Instead, couselor/debt management office will help soldiers in debt program too... Damn, I know that debt does not discriminate and invades every walk of life on this blessed-human earth!!...

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE when your entering the military.

Is that the kind of life you want. It is a commitment you make and must abide by during your time span your commited for and then that too can be extended.

If your signing up the get the "sign-up" bonus, that's a bad reason!!!!

Military life is hard, disciplined, and your family suffers as much as you do. You are gone for months/year at a time from your loved ones.

Military life has lots to offer young men and women, good educations etc.......

But there is a "price tag" attached........ and sometimes it's your life!!!

Its EVEN HARDER TO GET A JOB with a "military dishonorable discharge"..................a lot harder then with just a bankruptcy on your credit report.

It takes certain "breed" to be military. It is not for the "faint at heart" or the "wimps" - not in TODAY'S WORLD. Or probably in the future.

So "think" before you sign if your only reason to join the military is financial.

                Just my thoughts.

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

My hubby just retired Air Force 20+ years. It was a great experience but it was hard everytime he would deploy it would mean supporting two households. Because we had filed chapter 13 he was not allowed to have the credit card the GOV uses now for travel. So we would have to pay then when he got back send in forms to get payed back. Also in his last two years of service he was put in a non deployable status due to debt which means they pulled his security clearance and put him in a job that has nothing to do with the war. make sure you keep finances in order now they are looking at debt as a factor in your career (selling secrets or other ect)

thanks for the help and information everyone!

i'm planning to join the coast guard, i've talked to some coast guard forums and most say as long your bankrutpcy case is closed; and you don't apply for sensitive positions; i should be good; however they say speak to the recruiter first.

                    thanks again for the advice
