If I don't use the entire household exemption, can the remainder be applied to something else, like my car equity?
D...
The answer is... absolutely not.
Only wildcard exemptions can be applied at will. Sometimes, your State's unused homestead exemption, or the unused portion thereof, can be applied as a wildcard to any other property.
Some even go furhter to restrict wildcard exemptions to only exempt a certain amount of liquid funds (cash).
So, in the end, this varies by State, so you'd have to know what State you're in and how the exemptions apply in your State.
For the most part, the answer is that you cannot apply the unused portion of say a household goods exemption, to a car.
