    Lawyers Letter re: overdue library books!

    Just got a letter from a lawyer regarding overdue library books (don't know what the heck they're talking about - haven't been in the town's library for YEARS nor have any of my kids!). States I have 30 days to pay fines of $155! Should I call the library first? The library never notified me.

    1) They use the OLD address you filled out orginally on the card's APPLICATION, and you moved out later without notifying them address changes? (now multiply the late fees by many months yet??)

    2) You used SOMEONE else's card or someone else BORROWED your card to get a book that you didn't know of? (bro/sis, daughter/son, hubby/wife, etc?)

    3) Card get lost or stolen...

    Possibilities are ...endless..

      Who would you contact first - the library or the lawyer - doesn't the town have a better way to spend it money - a lawyer's letter for a $155 fine....

        1) If you contact lawyer first, they'll say "Pay this $$xxx.xx;

        2) If you contact library, they say "Contact/Pay their lawyer at ...";

        So, my answer is go back to #1 above.

        Regarding question about lawyer's fees, the county/town has frequent contracts with their lawyers to do thousands upon thousands of letters/collections like that (every year) or sell these debts to these collection lawyers already.. that why they DON'T care collection of small or tiny amounts...

          DV the attorney and see what you get back. It can't hurt... If the debt really isn't yours, then you can fight it.
