    Phone numbers...............

Every time you apply for something the potential creditor wants your work #, and your home phone #. Credit card outfits want you to "activate" your new card by using your home phone #.
Now they have a record of your home and work phones. What is to prevent someone from changing their home phone #, and not notifying the creditor? What if you leave your employer, voluntarily or involuntarily, and not notifying the creditor of your new employer/their phone number?

I never notified a creditor of my home phone number changes or if I changed jobs. At one time on each monthly statement, Citibank was printing the following number and asked me to verify and correct if necessary 915-000-0000. I didn't even live in that area code, it is 150 miles from where I was living. I never bothered and I was current and had every intention of staying that way. I didn't notify them because I didn't want their sales calls.

With so many people having cell phones instead of land lines, how can you call from a home phone anyway?
I used to have a life, now I have grandkids.

I have a very long time military buddy who loves to live under the radar.

He uses prepaid phones for services such as you have mentioned, and then throws the smashed phone away once its "usefullness has expired."

I asked once if that was not expensive....he said for a couple of times a year he needs such things...no.

      He sleeps good.

P.S. He also changes P.O. boxes occasionally too. I wonder if he worked for the CIA once.....hmmmm.....

Oh, and no credit cards either.

He does have a bank account though, but its offshore.

I think its a bit weird, but it does suggest options.

Offshore bank account? How do I get one that provides checking and a debit card for a low monthly fee?
Chapter 7, California system 2, no assets. Pro se with Nolo.

Honestly, I don't know. I need to ask him just for my own curiosity too.

I'm not sure how he does his finances, its not something we have ever discussed. He's conservative with his cash though.

He rents a nice apartment alone (I own alone, er...excuse me..."I rent from the mortgage company on a semi-permanent basis" own...) and own's a fairly late model car that he paid cash for.

Shops at good places, but always cash. Avoids giving his real name, phone number, does not do surveys, no "fill out the card and win a new car" stuff. Uses that automated announcement on his throw away phones.

Absolutely refuses to give a SSN...and raises enough hell that I've actually seen customer service reps just make something up to get him through the line...

Loves to eat, drink and visit old times (we served together extensively in the military) but we don't get into much detail.

Shops alot at the military exchange, which contributes to a side of anonymity.

We were stopped by the police once when he made an illegal right turn (no turn on red...but sign was down from recent storms). The only thing he ever said was "am I free to go?" Otherwise, he refused to talk with the cop. But he was not mean about it. I don't even know if he got a ticket....

Kinda weird, but I'm not all the friendly with the po po either...so...

I'll see what I can find out....

              I really am serious.

I don't want it to sound too strange. We were wounded in action together, and he's treated for minor disabilities at the Veterans Administration Hospital as I am. So, he's not too far under the radar.

You can bet that Uncle Sam has our prints, DNA, various body tissue samples and locations pinned down very well.

It just a consumer thing with him. He's hypervigilent, like me. We are always prepared to get out of town fast when the big one hits.

He's just more anal about it.

              Its still weird.....
