My thoughts for what it's worth:
(1) Read the following books: Nolo Bankruptcy books, Bankruptcy for Dummies, US Bankruptcy Code & Rules, and scan others at book store.
(2) Attend a 341 meeting as a visitor; it's a small theater setting, so you can discretely sit in the back, watch, and leave. Each case takes about 20-30 min.
(3) Get the forms and understand them.
(4) Understand the process, time frames, etc. ( books will help you).
(4) You'll see how much the atty's participate when you watch a 341 meeting.
(5) Seemed to me the trustee(s) were very professional at the 341 meeting.
(6) The Univ of Minn Law School Library has some text books that are easy to read.
(7) The Mn Attny General Website also has a good booklet on Bankruptcy that is very helpful reading.
(8) Continue to read the messages on this board.
Just a few thoughts...

Hi I am from MN too. (St Paul) and we are in the process of filing CH7 (we need to pay off attorney first) Our attorney is $2600 which includes filing fees. I am not sure if that is high or average but compared to our debt is it well worth it and I felt very comfortable when I was there. They didn't make me feel bad about it etc. I agree the hardest part was just admitting that we need to do this. So far it has been pretty painless other than the hundreds of phone calls from creditors but that's what the off button on the ringer is for. Stay with this forum and read and ask questions it has been a life saver for me. It has answered alot of my questions and given me piece of mind. We still have a long way to go before this is over but I do see light at the end of the tunnel and I know things will be ok. I hope the same for you and everyone on the forum. Keep us posted on how things go.

I am from St. Paul as well. I have my first appointment on monday with an attorney. I had no idea what to expect as far as costs. Thats more than I thought it would be. Anyone else get quoted or had it done for different numbers? Does anyone recommend an attorney or law firm, I'm not sure who to go with?

I am living in the south suburbs. I just had a consultation a few days ago and was quoted about $1600 for attorney and filing fees. I have a very basic case. I only met with a paralegal though and not the attorney, so someone suggested it may be a BK mill. I made an appointment with another attorney next week. I would love to hear any recommendations also.

Minnesota also
We have met with 2 attorney's as well. We are meeting with a 3rd on 3/27, then will decide. The first attorney rep quoted us $2599 all inclusive, but I just didn't feel right at that office.
The second attorney was a little older, actually an attorney, and quoted us a range from $1400 - 1700, plus $299 filing fee. He was much more thorough, but took all info down by hand, then we were relieved to hear that a paralegal would be putting all info in software. This is a larger law firm also. Am awaiting paperwork called retainer paperwork with actual prices on it. This firm allows you to pay half when you retain them, then balance has to be paid out when they push the button and file.
3rd attorney we have yet to meet, but we can't file until 90 days out because I stupidly had a charge card on a blockbuster account and we were 3 days late on a video, so pushed the filing date out from 2/15 to 3/2 +90, so will be filing in 6/10.
I will let you know if we like the 3rd one.

We're just about done with our process...less than 2 weeks left until discharge. We used an attorney in SW Metro area. Was about $1700, and then an additional $300 per reaffirmation agreement.
Nice guy, and you get most of your stuff covered during one meeting with them. We've e-mailed a few times and they have been quick to respond. All they do is BK's and it is just a small group (1 Attorney and 2 Legal Aides). PM me if you'd like his info.

We had our 341 this week and things went well. In and out in 5 minutes. Had the opportunity since things were running late to watch 6 other 341's and they all were pretty much the same. I was surprised how many attorneys had never met their clients before. One couple didn't seem to know if they owned property in another state. lol
At a minimum, read over your papers and make sure it is all correct. I liked our attorney, but he seems swamped right now and lost his assistant recently.
