    HSA's and reasonably necessary amounts

I am doing the means test and plugging in my amounts but I am wondering what is a reasonably necessary amount for health savings account contributions.
I have a spouse and 4 minor children. Both of us have chronic medical conditions that require several medications daily and we have 4 accident prone children. LOL
Our health insurance has a $10,000 deductible ( and for that we pay $380 a month) so we need to have a hsa in order to pay out monthly meds, dr visits and if we have the need, hospital costs. I contribute $495 a month. Because of this I have no out of pocket expenses for health care.

My question is this...What amount do you contribute to a health savings account and was it ever questioned ?

It is a bit high. The IRS standard for people under 65 is $60 average per person per month. Google IRS living expense standards and the site will show you average expenses for food, housing, utilities, health etc.....
From this day on I move FORWARD!!!

well, I don't think we are average then as meds for me are nearly $300 a month and meds for hubby can be almost the same....and that doesn't include anything for any of the children or glasses or medical or acute illness meds.

We put in $300 a month for a family of 4 and we only have a $500 deductible. It was never questioned. I keep all my reciepts and I can prove that all that is used up completely within the year on medical expenses.

I have several health problems and my ds has ADHD and takes meds for it. It's never been questioned.

My husband had 5 bypass surgery and a pacemaker in 2007 and gets Acute Cellulitis every 6 mths.

I'm 100% disabled due to a car accident in 3-05, have a Spinal Cord Implanted and 7 surgeries. I see a Chronic Pain Management doctor every month.

His company pays for his medical insurance and I have Medicare along with a Supplemental Policy. Our out of pocket expenses for just Monthly Prescriptions are $500. That doesn't include the Co-Pays at the doctor's office. Hubby spent a week in the hospital last month. Haven't gotten insurance billings to see how much we are going to owe, but know his deductible is $500 & out of pocket max. is $2,000. So that alone, tells me we will have to pay around $2,500.

As long as you have documentation, our Attorney told us we could use the past 12 mths. or 6 mths. (whichever would benefit us the most) medical expenses. I'm going with 12 mths. as I forked out $4,464 in dental bills in Feb. due to the medicines I have to take to have kind of quality of life.

Seeing oral surgeon next week to have two back teeth pulled and Dental Insurance doesn't cover everything & hubby was eating a salad last night & a filling broke off.

Our shih-tzu requires 2 prescriptions a month and is on prescription dog food. I have to laugh (as we are so medical poor) and say we are All Walking (well I need assistance) Patients
