    When to file?

I was working FT until a couple of months ago, when our company cut our hours back to 32 per week. Things were tight but I used our tax refund to help us get by. Now that's gone and at the end of this month, I'll be laid off until things pick back up. At my 32 hours, our income is $140 over the median income for the means test. I'm assuming it'd be better to wait until after my official lay off, right?

Will I have to wait even longer since it counts the 6 mos leading up to filling or will a lay off make an exception to that? Hope that made sense. lol

I have a consult appt on Friday to see where we stand but just thought I'd get some opinions before hand. Thanks.

If you're not working, there is no rush to file. Wait until your finances stabilize.

I do know that my layoff will be temporary, 3-6 mos. I will still have a job, its just a matter of business picking back up again. kwim?

Your average income for the 6 calendar months preceding the month you file is used to calculate your income for the means test. If you are really that close, then it will probably only take 1 month of unemployment to make your average decrease enough to file.
