Trustee returned part of my taxes...

My BK discharged on 4/3 and I received a letter from the trustee yesterday. My first thought was uh oh. I opened it and there was a check for the portion of my tax return that I get to keep. Are you ready?????

$20........I got a pretty good laugh out of it. I may have to frame it instead of cash it.

At this point in my path of bankruptcy I would tuck it way back in my coach wallet (if they don't take it from me) and keep it for a really, really, rainey day. If I come out with anything other than money brains I will be so happy!!

2008 refund was $500. Every refund prior to that was close to $5000, but I adjusted my withholding early in 2008 to keep more of my cash in my paychecks. Didn't think I would be filing BK at the end of '08 (or ever for that matter), but that change in withholding worked out well. The trustee was thinking that he was getting close to $5000 since prior years taxes were that. Oh well.....

Smart thinking on adjusting your taxes ahead of time! If it would have been $5k, I'm sure you would have been kicking yourself...

I would advise anyone at this point in time to do some tax planning to bring your refund down and keep more of your money throughout the year. Afterall, Uncle Sam doesn't pay interest on those overpayments, but they sure do expect it if you owe them.
