I budgeted for $275 in my petition for my gov't student loan because that is the payment I've been required to pay. I only have about 3k to pay back.
After my bk was discharged, my $275 a month went to $50 a month - so they extended the term and lowered the monthly. I still pay $275 a month.
Now - what's cool about this though is that first, without the initial $275 payment on my petition - I may have been pushed into a 13. And also, in this economy, it's nice to know that if I can't make the $275 a month, I only have to pay $50.
Sallie Mae private student loans - that's another story. They are a**holes and I hope they burn in hell. But, what I"m doing is making their minimum payments and then socking away money in a separate bank account so that I can pay them off for good one day. I really really hate them and their unfair practices. They act like a cc card and I still cannot believe they got away with not being dischargeable.
