During my 1st marriage my ex husband worked an under the table job, and did not file a 1099. Long story short, taxes were owed and we filed joint for the year he owed them. Letters were mailed to me, but for whatever reason they mailed them to my ex mother in laws address whom I had never lived with nor used her address on any tax documents at all.
Well anyway she never told me about them, and a tax lien was put onto my credit. Ok during that time my ex husband was in the navy. He paid on those owed taxes every month, as DFAS garnished $120 each month. The IRS also kept his tax refunds, until the amount was paid off. Ok he paid it all off in 2003. I have faxed copies to the court and the state showing proof it was paid off. It STILL shows up on my credit reports, 7 yrs later. I once again disputed this through all 3 credit reporting agencies. Equifax and transunion did not remove the tax lien, but experian did remove it. This makes zero sense to me.
I do not know what else to do to get it off of my credit when I have called, faxed proof and e-mailed them proof. I have never had any tax returns held due to any owed back taxes either, as I also filed an innocent spouse/injured spouse form years ago.
Even though my FICO scores have gone up a lot, my biggest fear is that lien will prevent me from future large purchases, such as a home. Should I contact an attorney over it? Another thing the amount owed is different on all 3 as well. One shows $200, one shows $1,900 and the other shows almost $2,300. I am not going to pay it again if that is what they expect, because it was paid off March 2003.
Let me clarify. I never knew about the notices sent out by the IRS. It was not until my ex informed me of paying it off in 2003 and also mailing me the tax lien notice that his Mom sent to him, that I even knew about it. I filed the innocent spouse form as soon as I found out, which was approved. Had I known in 1999 when the notices 1st went out, I would have answered on them but the old bitty purposely did not tell me that I was getting offical Govt. mail at her house. I am still confused why they sent it to her house, unless it's because he had used her address for something after we divorced in 1996.
I just want it off of ALL of my credit reports, because I never know who is going to pull what.
