Chase failed to email alert me on payment due date...

...I had my due date marked on my calendar to pay on time. When I went online to pay, I noticed they had changed my date to pay & I was late by two days. I made my payment (big) and then got a letter in the mail that they jacked my rate from 13% to 29%. I went looking for my paperwork for my other card that I had paid off because there was a transfer balance offer for six months @ 10%. I couldn't find the paperwork (as usual) so I went online to check for the offer & lo & behold, I found an offer for 12 months @ 7%. So a bad thing turned into a good thing!

So if you're paying online, beware of this issue & always check your payment dates!

Yep.. sorry but that is a NEW-LOW tactic all CC companies just discover!! (They called it Gold Mine Tricks)..

Luckily for me, I log on their web sites often weekly and ePay them EVERY fricking time before they are trying to SHORTEN my due time SOONER & SOONER on every fricking month THEREAFTER, WITHOUT ANY WARNING EMAIL NOTICE of NEWLY SHORTENED due dates... LOL... So watch out guys.. CC due dates are now not a FIXED 30-day anymore, it could be 30 this month, 25 next month, then 15 following months, and so on, etc.. until you get SHORTEN-CHOKED out!!

My credit card is set up to deduct my statement balance automatically on the due date from my checking account. When my new statement arrives I go online and make sure my automatic payments are setup.

Rather than have the due date on your calender have the statement date on your calender then go to your bill pay and set up an automatic payment for the due date.

Also, I review all my accounts at least once a week to make sure everything is in order. I have never been and never will be late with a payment---I have been BK though.

Question: Is it legal when you have automatic email to alert you of your due date & the email doesn't come?

Claiming the email didn't come would be easy. Proving you weren't sent the email is next to impossible.

I thought the new credit card law that finally took effect requires that payments be due the same day of each month.

I was thinking the same thing. I noticed all of my due dates the past few months have stayed consistently the same day of the month (i.e. 5th). I got a few notices in the mail to that effect saying it was the new credit card law.

                From Bankrate.com -

Consumers will receive their statements at least 21 days before the due date, up from the current requirement of 14 days, allowing them more time to pay and avoid late fees.

The law also sets some rules for due dates and requires that they fall on the same day each month, and if that happens to be when the issuer doesn't accept mailed payments, such as on holidays or weekends, then payments received the next business day can't trigger late fees. If card issuers change the mailing address for payments, they can't impose late fees if the adjustment caused a delay in crediting the payment.

Even if Chase is at fault this example shows how important it is to be on top of your bills. It is very easy to pay your bills on time (if you have the money) with all the available tools we have today.

                  Ways to pay your bill:

                  1) From the website of the biller. In this case Chase. They usually give you an option to set up automatic payments so you can put in an automatic payment to pay the minimum balance, the full balance or the entire balance. When I was struggling I had an auto pay set to pay the minimum and if I could afford more I would add another payment.

                  2) From your banks website. Your bank should have a free bill pay. Once again you can set up future one time payments or auto payments.

                  3) snail mail.

Bottom line...If you're going to acquire credit you need to stay on top of your bills that way you don't get late fees or jacked up interest rates.

If you can pay your bills the day it's due then you can also check your statements the day they come out to schedule your future pay dates...It's really that easy!!!

I pay all my bills online and have those email alerts set. I have never had a problem with any of them except Chase (who I have now paid off by transfering balance to way lower interest card). As I mentioned this happened once before when my Wachovia card became Chase with the takeover. It happened to a number of people I know who were Wachovia customers as well, at the same time. I have no idea how the email didn't come & totally understand that it is my responsibility to keep abreast of these issues. Chase account is now paid off & closed. Didn't need the bs that came with their card.
