    question

i declared bankruptcy in june of 98 it has all cleared up and doesn't show on any of my credit reports(been a long 10 yrs.).today i went into a credit union that i included in my bankruptcy ($3100.00) in 1998 to inquire about an old savings and checking account that i still had their. when i talked to one of the banking people the first thing out of his mouth was you owe us 3100 dollars so i say to him that was included in my bankruptcy and wasn't to happy that something that i am not proud of and should not be on any records after 10 yrs. he said that it's just a flag and means nothing i asked them to remove it and they refuse. my question is do they have a right to have a flag on my accounbt that i went bankrupt in 1998 come up whenever they look into my account and also what recourse do i have to get them to remove this reminder from my account.

Unfortunately, although your credit reports are now clear of your bankruptcy, your creditors included in your filing have that on your permanent record with them and due to that, may never extend credit to you again.

If I were you. I would have walked out of that CU and never looked back. The more you stir the pot with those old accounts. Then they start to mess with your credit reports, putting items on there that shouldn't be. Steer clear.

There are plenty of other CU's that would be happy to bestow upon you plenty of new credit products. You are ten years out. So you are fresh again. Check out what others have to offer. I'll be glad once I hit my ten year mark and I will be in sitting pretty like you.

went back into the credit union today because it was really bothering me.they said they deleted the old account and that the flag on the account was deleted along with it. for you guys and gals out there who are in the midst of their bankruptcies there is light at the end of the tunnel. establish credit pay it back on time pay back more than the minimum and as time goes on take out small loans pay them back take out a bigger loan pay that back and when your ten year prison sentence is up guess what your credit will be oustanding. this is what i did over the ten years from 98 to 2008 and right now my highest credit score is 789 with my lowest being 755 between the three credit bureas. be smart and responsible and it might seem like a long ten years but when it's over in reality it went fast. i am not proud of what happened 10 years ago, it was all my fault and if i could have avoided bankruptcy i would have. all i can say is you will get a 2nd chance and the 10 years between your 2nd chance is your time to prove yourself...good luck to all!!!!!

Ten year prison sentence? My prison sentence ended when I filed for BK and 1 year out I have little trouble getting credit.

good to hear, peewee. i can see how both debt and bk can feel like prison sentences: debt in a max pen, and hopefully post bk on house arrest
