    Buying a car before BK

Hi, we haven't paid our credit cards in 3-4 months. Getting geared up to file. Cashed in a small investment for about $3000 to pay our lawyer. Last week my husband's car breaks down and it may need a complete new engine. Not sure yet, but it will be at least $1000 just to find out. The new engine would be $5100 plus all the labor.

So, how would it look to get a very small car loan of about $4000-$6000 to buy a used car that would hopefully get us through the 3 - 4 years. And, since our credit is already damaged, do you think we could get a loan. Not sure if anyone makes car loans that small.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

I recommend going to another repair place. They typically do not charge $1000 just to tell you what is wrong with the car and if it needs a engine.

I have no idea on financing, as the variables are just to high. (credit score, outstanding debt, income...etc...)

    All the best.

Thank you. They know the head is damaged, but apparently to take it out and send it to the machine shop to test it to see if it can be repaired is about $700. We're already in abut $300 for labor. At first they said it was the timing belt. To get the head out they said is about 7 hours of labor and the test at the machine shop (magniflex) is $150. I have a friend who knows about cars so I think I need to talk to him. He may have some ideas.

      Thanks!

It is my understanding that if the head is damaged it can be replaced instead of replacing the entire motor. Ask your friend about IF the head is damaged, if another one (used) can be machined down and used on this motor.

My dad ran into the same issue with his motor. He was able to get a head at a junk yard, machined it down and put it on instead. It worked.

Please keep in mind, this is only what I heard as I know next to nothing about cars.

Shop around! And ask your buddy....they are the best source of information....!

Regardless, $5100 sounds WAAAY steep for an engine. What kind of car is it? Sheesh.

And transportation is a necessity, no one is going to give you a hard time for trying to fix your car, or replace it.
