    bk listings in newspapers?

a few posters have indicated that their local newspapers prints names of bk filers on a regular basis.

i am wondering how common that is. can people post their experiences with such things?

i happen not to read my local newspaper, so i don't know. i did search for my name online and thank heavens nothing came up.

what are people's opinions about this? it seems to serve absolutely no purpose other than humiliating people who are already at the end of their ropes.

I agree, I think its lame.

It is probably some antiquated method of putting creditors on notice that a debtor filed BK, pre internet and searchable databases?

Probably doesn't serve much purpose other than embarassment in these days.

How many people really buy the paper anymore anyway?
Probably only a fraction of those read public notices.

Where I live at public record only lists divorces, marriages, lawsuits and arrests...thank goodness! I don't think putting a BK in the paper is right. I can't believe they still do that in some places.

It's public information; same as births, deaths, engagements, weddings, name changes, arrests. etc., etc. BK's appear weekly in our newspaper in the Business section - all it shows are name(s), town/city where residing, Chapter filed, amount of assets and amount of liabilities. If your name does get published in the newspaper, it will eventually appear on line if googled - try putting quotes around your name and googllng it or typing "In Re" in front of your last name.

i did google my name in quotes, and also "in re" with my last name. nothing came up, thank heavens. i never look at the local newspapers so i have no idea if they list anything.

it's true that it's public information. however, nothing is gained by publicizing it in the papers. it does nobody any good and humiliates people who are already down. i think publishing lists of bk filers should be banned. it makes the "fresh start" much harder. of course if there is specific reason for the public to care, then it's fine, but just private people shouldn't be exposed like this. JMHO.

I also would think it would cost newspapers time and money to gather the BK information to publish.
Not much revenue in Bk listings and many newspapers are facing BK themselves. Wonder if they would list their own Chapter 11's? My area papers stopped printing BKs several years ago. They now only list local court briefs and crimes.

My paper doesn't list bks, but it does list home and vehicle repos and the sheriff sales, including how much you owed and all the specs on what was repoed. And EVERYONE reads it. (Super small town full of nosy people)

The paper comes out every Sun and Thurs, and for a few months, there was at least five home repos in every single paper. It is heartbreaking to see how many people have lost their homes. Yeah, I guess I was being nosy by looking, but after our vehicle repo was listed in there, I have become morbidly aware of other people losing stuff.

i hope that means that mostly the people who look at the listings have been through bk themselves...

Even though BK is a public information, I don't agree with putting names of filers in a newspaper. Just Stupid

You would be surprised who reads those notices. My neighbor came over today to tell me read my name in the paper today that I filed. I was coy and and said "how do you know it's me, I'm not the only PookieNY in the world". He said because it listed my address and then I froze! I found the finance section in my paper where they list judgements and bankruptcies and it only listed my name and my largest creditor, not my address.
