Tobee, we have a few friends that we lost communication with. This morning my roommate drove around to those he could get to, and luckily found them fine but without any means of communication. He came back with a list of people to call. I'm sure your friend will be fine. My thoughts are with you and all those with loved ones in the area.

A friend sent me the following link to a series of photographs of Frankenstorm Sandy's aftermath:

The Atlantic, The Atlantic Magazine, TheAtlantic.com, Atlantic, news, opinion, breaking news, analysis, commentary, business, politics, culture, international, science, technology, national and life

Tobee, and everyone affected: I hope and pray for the well-bing of your loved ones, and that you will hear from them soon.

Thoughts are with those in the affected areas - hopefully they'll be able to have supplies there soon to assist.

On a somewhat lighter note--and maybe something that will bring a smile--the Jersey shore whimsey known as Lucy the Elephant, seems to have weathered the storm well:

Lucy the Elephant is a six story high National Historic Landmark located along the beach in Margate, New Jersey.

I have never seen Lucy in person, just read about her/it in some books on architecture, and have followed her since then.

Most of us here, for obvious reasons, can't afford to write big checks to Sandy relief efforts. We do what we can; donate a freezer, pack up a box of extra coats, blankets, diapers, etc.

Matt Lauer made a point of quickly organizing Friday's fundraising concert because the need is likely to get lost in the days ahead due to the election.

I get a ton of emails everyday from various retail sites, groupon, etc. I haven't been a customer for quite awhile, but I still like reading them. One thing I noticed that bothers me, is most of these emails, as well as the internet landing pages, in the last couple of days, have a message about stores that are closed or shipping may be delayed, etc. Very few use the opportunity of their vast email list resources to add a mention of 'please donate to the Red Cross.' My thoughts are probably due to being in advertising for most of my life, but this does bother me.

So, I've started my own email campaign right back to the retailers that forgot or didn't think. It's a simple thing to include a Red Cross PSA in an email or website.

The barrier islands here in So. jersey have opened access to residents. The Margate bridge, a privately-owned entity, was charging tolls until the local TV station called them on it. They temporarily stopped the tolls and will donate what they already collected. My point is, some people/companies need to be reminded of the right thing to do.

Good people of the BK forum, please do whatever you can, and I'm sure many of you are, no matter how small it seems. Get creative and encourage others at any opportunity. Thanks for listening and helping our friends, family and neighbors.

I'm so glad that Cape May did well -- it is such a beautiful place!

Sorry that the rest of the Jersey coast (and other places) had so much damage -- houses, cars, and jobs lost. Many people are homeless. So much heartbreak.

i still can't find my friend sh'e's near pt. pleasant.

my son just went back to his house and said the sewer lines must have broken. we finally were able to speak with him last night and he said it looks apocalyptic. people are fighting over food. he said his store there is millions of damage. he can't restock because the distributors have lost their entire inventories. food is not getting in. he said there is NO shore left! he said they can never rebuild many homes since the land is just gone.

he said it's freezing and it's getting colder and many still don't have power. he does, but across his street those people do not. he said it is a mess

So sorry to hear of your son's losses,it must be devastating!!

It just reminds me how very very lucky we were here - Cape May has set up several donation sites and there have already been many truckloads headed up the PArkway to the people in need!!!

I am blessed to live here.

I am taking a pickup load of donations to the Red Cross tomorrow when I go into work. We are donating clothes, dog food, canned goods, towels, blankets, shampoo, combs, brushes, toothbrushes, the list goes on an on. I live in a great neighborhood where everyone donates when tragedy stikes we try to help out the best we can.
We were there for the folks who went through Katrina and now we are going to help the folks going through Sandy.
