Yesterday it was about 80 degree's here and I left my cell phone in my car all day. I went to make a call and it said the cell phone had over heated. ( new I phone) . I put the cell phone in front of the a/c unit and in about 10 minutes everything was fine.

I wonder how many overheats the iPhone can handle.

Even a laptop will overheat in those conditions. The interior temperature of your car was probably close to 100F and the interior of the phone was over 100F. Since the iPhone is nothing more than a computer with a phone (that's what I call it), it will not respond well to thermal conditions outside its (pre-programmed) tolerance.

As for sitting it in front of the A/C, now that's interesting.

Really? It was 80 degrees in the Pacific Northwest, in May? Every time I've ever visited--usually in July or August--it only tops out around 70.

I had a GPS device's back melt in the car. The plastic swelled until the backside was semicircular. These things are designed for use in a car on a dashboard or attached to the windshield. This device functioned for a while, after I discovered this, then gave up the ghost entirely.

The new unit now wears a hat when in use, and is taken off the windshield and stored out of the sun's rays when not in use.

As JB pointed out, do not leave a laptop on the seat where the sun can get to it--or anything else for that matter. A hardback book's 'boards'--the hard covers that the material is on, will warp in the sun. Stow everything into a cloth container under the seat, or anywhere that the sun will not hit.

Yeah, we have those here in the South. They last from March to November.

One time I went on a trip to escape the heat of Phoenix and visit some relatives in Eugene, Oregon, and as luck would have it, they were having a heat wave at the time. The only way to escape it was to drive to the coast-- Florence, Oregon, is usually considerably cooler than Eugene during the summer months.


Back to the phone topic. I just have a little cheapy Nokia cell phone and it has been exposed to extremely high heat here in Phoenix, Arizona, and never has any problems with it. It is so old that it has the old fashioned LCD screen. No colors on the screen-- just a grey background with black numbers and letters..

Keeping things out of the sun is important. Just imagine standing in the sun vs. standing in the shade. It does make a huge difference.

I was in Phoenix one summer and man was it hot, even at night. I have had alot of different cell phones and I leave them in my car with no problems.

Oh, it's awful in the summer. We pay for the wonderful falls, winters, and springs by having the worst summers of anyone in the nation. It's not unusual to have 90s for the low temps at night. And then 118 for a high.

One thing I love about working temp jobs is that I can bug out of here in June and not come back until late September.

I've already started packing up my stuff, and soon I will be mooching off of relatives in Oregon for a few months.

GoingDown, there are alot of hot places in Or-e-gun in the summer to. Try Medford in August. Best place in the U.S.A., Bend and Sunriver Oregon. Medford often has 60 to 90 days over 90 degrees in the summer.

Bend is nice, but I prefer the cool ocean breezes of Florence, Oregon. Florence is a relatively short drive from Eugene, so, when I want to really cool down, I just drive over to the coast.

Florence has these amazing sand dunes, and you can rent sand buggies and go 4-wheeling right by the ocean. It is a fun place to spend the day.

GoingDown: Yes, Florence is cool. I went camping there once. Lincoln City is my favorite. (Casino) Newport is good too. The big difference between Oregon coast and California is the ocean water in Oregon is always cold. Are you a Duck fan? They do have a pretty good team.

I like Lincoln City, Newport, and Waldport, too. There is a highway in between Waldport and Corvallis that goes through these thick dark forests where the tree limbs stretch over the road entirely and you can't even see the sky. It's like something out of Lord of the Rings.

And yeah, even in the middle of the summer, the ocean water is so cold. I like wading out into it until I can't stand it anymore. Some of the braver locals actually surf in it. One of the nice things about it being so cold is that you usually don't have to worry about the beaches being overly crowded.

Oh yes, my whole family are all Ducks fans. Most of them attended the University of Oregon.
