Last time, our house was drenched and we had much water damage. We are fortunate to have a small gen. Three weeks without power so I got three big batteries and three radiator fans for cars, and at night, it blew the mosquitoes off of us as well as the intolerable wet heat. That was 2004. We ran the gen three hours a day to charge batts and refresh the refrigerator. Ate out the freezer first.

OH, update, concerned Washington Monument is listing. More stuff happening. 'Hub

The Earthquake was short, but intense. So far, no aftershocks. Doesn't really compare with the 2 earthquakes I experienced while in Anaheim California a number of years ago. 7.5 and 6.2 and about a hundred aftershocks. Probably not much will get done in the DC area for the rest of the day. Wait - that 's the way it is all of the time!!!

Heading down to Myrtle Beach for a vacation the day after the hurricane is sceduled to hit South Carolina. What fun - an earthquake and a hurricane all in one week.

Earthquake stories ? ....uh... nothing like waking up in Southern CA to the rumble of an earthquake and trying to make it down the hallway to the kids room, stepping like a drunk sailor on a ship at high sea... bracing oneself from one side of the hallway wall to the other as the house is moving sideways, back & forth...Went through that s%$*^%t twice.....I prayed to the high heavens, and bet anybody proclaiming to be an atheist is going to convert in a hurry....

i know it's NOT funny, but you made me laugh...sorry. my dh felt the same way when we were in college in the bay area and he felt his first earthquake. however, i was no better going through my first really bad thunder and lightening storm when it hit our house!! now that's scary! i'd rather shake a bit anyday than have the heavens light up and God won't stop bowling!

Wellll....that was interesting - and scary.

We are less than 20 miles from the epicenter - our town is damaged, both schools are damaged (and subsequently closed). I was on the phone with my mother when the sound was heard first - like thunder...then the shaking started - house was swaying - poor kitty cat was terrified & went one way..I ran the other to head outside (150 year old house...yeah, wasnt too sure it'd still be standing), all while still on the phone trying to ensure my mom was ok - but not quite grasping what was happening for about 15-20 seconds. Was very surreal to say the least. All I heard was stuff breaking and falling and her yelling. Jesus....I dont ever want to go through THAT again - took forever to calm my mom down, thought she was going to have a stroke.

I remember when living in CA all the earthquakes we'd get in San Diego, wasnt pleasant, but certainly wasnt as bad as this one was that I can remember.

@ Hub - you cursed us with your talk of "what would happen" post... *shakes finger at you*
