If you want to get away from viruses and malware, try one of the more popular Linux distros, such as Ubuntu, Mandriva or Mint...they are free to download (legally) and run quite well on older hardware...most of them can be ran "live" from the CD so you'll get a very good idea what you're up against without actually installing anything on the hard drive...
