    Doing the right thing

    What would you do?

Trying to scrounge up ideas to make $$ for some last minute gifts, i realized i had some unused ink cartridges for a printer that no longer works. Went to OD and asked the Mgr if i could return - He said they would give me the last lowest selling price in store credit. But he did not think they sold them anymore and if not i get nothing.

Well he checked and said i was good to go. They asked for my ID but when scanning they came up $49 and im pretty sure they were only $10-15.

As the thoughts entered i got a sick feeling in my stomach. I wanted/needed the money - Thats' why i was doing this in the first place...and MORE is better! So i accepted the gift card and now this feeling won't go away!!

Would you have accepted or told them you do not think that is what you paid?

If it were me i would go back and tell them that the more you thought about it the more you thought that it might not be the right amt they returned to you. I would rather have nothing than have it bother me.
That gives them the chance to correct it and if they "insist' it IS right then you did all you could to correct it.
There is no better feeling than to be at ease with your mind.
best to you and happy holidays.

If the cartridges are for an older model printer, then it is possible that they DO sell for a lot more now. People still have working printers but it's harder to find the cartridges... supply & demand. So even if you didn't pay that much for them originally, things may be different now.

I just ran into a similar situation. The remote for my TV went kaput. They want $159 for a replacement! Why? Because the TV is no longer made and the remotes are getting more and more scarce.

If the cartridges came up $49 on the scanner, I say "go with it." They seem to think the cartridges are more valuable than you do so let 'em have the cartridges for the price they're willing to pay!
OK - from now on it's not a "Bankruptcy." It's a "Weight Loss Program." I'm in. Sign me up.

I'm with Oregon. You're the only one who has to sleep with yourself. If it's bothering you, definitely bring them back and just let them know. Personally, I would let them know. What comes around goes around. . .

Consider it an investment that paid off well. Seriously. You didn't lie. You didn't ask for a specific amount. They scanned the cartridges, and they gave you what their system said the cartridges were worth.

In a free-market economy, the value of any item ultimately is determined by how much someone is willing to pay for it. They were willing to pay $49.00. That's the value. Deal done, case closed.

I also would go and ask. The pricing of ink cartridges is strange (well, not. It's called MARKETING.) 'Hub and I routinely visit the electronics section of our county landfill--located just inside the front gate. There we glean old computers, printers, etc., that we can part out and put the working components on eBay.

I picked up an HP printer/scanner that looked new-even had the original packing tie-wraps on the cords. The ink cartridges were in it. We assumed that they were either spent, or defective. So we went to the local office supply store. Replacement cartridges for that model of printer, both color and bw in a combo pack=$55.00. Meanwhile, on sale was a similar model of printer for $29.00, fully loaded and ready to go.

This is very irritating to those of us who are trying to do 'right' and Recycle, and those of us trying to correct discrepancies in the sales tickets.

Thank you for listening to your Conscience. That is the party you have to live with.

you better go and tell them cause it can be caused upon the manager when accounts will be cleared , so it is better to inform that poor manager .

You all gave me some good points to consider. Thanks very much for that. I did think that it was slightly less bad due to being store credit - so the funds are ultimately going back to OD. I also definitely get the Free Market approach, and i didnt go in there intending to deceive - they gave me what the system said.

Fact remains, I've gotta go back. Thanks for reaffirming what i already knew.

Hey Peeps, FYI the exact same thing happened to me awhile back...they wanted me to send in the remote as well as the TV for diagnosis/Repair. Seemed crazy to me so at the advice of a friend i unscrewed the remote and opened it up, a small bulb was at the top. Took the Remote to an electronics supply store - replacemnt bulb was like 3 bucks and it outlasted the TV picture! Anyway the bulbs die out on things, and it's alway best to start with the fixing simplest/cheapest fix first. Another quickie: The turn signal went out on my old SUV, i got tired of driving around doing hand signals so took it to a Shop for repair. They wanted to charge $89 just to scan it for diagnosis and tell me what needed to be replaced - I went to autozone and told them, bought a $5 flasher that simply popped in and out under the steering wheel...problem solved.
