Last I checked, Pre-Paid Legal doesn't actually PAY for bankruptcy, you merely use a lawyer that has agreed to charge only $x amount. Bankruptcy is part of the "discount" network but not an actual paid benefit. (this could vary by state).
The problem with any legal insurance is that you are locked into using specific attorney's and firms. And as with any insurance company, in the drive to keep down costs, they go with whoever is the cheapest and meets some bare minimum of qualification.
But, for the average family with basic legal needs, it is not a bad program.
I have been looking into this too, since it is offered through my employer. Can you see what attorneys are included in the plan in your area?
For the plan through my emp, bk attorney fees are covered in full. The attorney that I intend to use is one of those referred through the plan. He is the most recommended bk attorney around. I'm thinking for $10/month it's not a bad way to go. It appears that all I would have to pay are the court costs and pre/post classes.
It will not cover costs associated with vacating a judgement. But it will provide coverage for debt collections. It also covers costs for divorce, real estate transactions and wills.
I'd be interested to hear other folks input on this as well.
Stopped paying 8/2010, Filed 2/2011, 341 3/2011 done, Report of no distribution . . . Discharged & Closed 5/2011!
A friend of mine wants me to sell the service, but to many in this climate it's another bill when their trying to scale down
You pay $34 a month for the service or you can sell the service as well.

Oh, LOL
Think of it like Multi level marketing (although not quite). Those that really treat it like a business, have great business and corporate contacts can do pretty well at it. But at the end of the day, you are an insurance salesman. And there are probably already tons of reps in your area. I would think that with companies slashing budgets, people watching every penny, a program like Pre-Paid legal is a tough sell.
Aside from considering BK, when was the last time you actually "needed" legal assistance. Sure, there are things that are nice to have, a Will, etc., but at the end of the day, in the cycle of selling, you are really only appealing to the weakest buying motives...Benefit in the Future, and Interest and Curiosity.
Buying motivations are (in rank of strongest to weakest)
Pain the present
Pain in the future
Benefit in the present
Benefit in the future
Interest and curiosity.
