I found this article on the web by a Georgetown professor and thought it was pretty interesting, especially as most of us have had unpleasant contact with the legal system by being in debt.
It points out that law is an extension of politics, the difference between "law" and "order", how the state connects the two concepts in the (naive) public mind, and goes on to advocate more of a free market in legal services rather than the state-centric model. A good read for a rainy day.
