I'm a sub teacher and ran into a cash flow problem this summer. Long story. After hours of research and numerous phone calls I found out that every county in the U.S. offers emergency assistance to help you pay either your mortgage or rent for one month. You have to prove that you had an unanticipated emergency within the past thirty days and that you have sufficient income (income must be greater than your mortgage or rent payment) to continue making your rent/mortgage payment thereafter.
Two weeks ago I applied for mortgage assistance and I just found out today that the county is going to pay 90 percent of my house payment (principal and interest-no taxes no homeowners' insurance) for August. What a blessing. You don't have to be low-income either. The biggest hurdle for me was getting someone at Bank of America (my lender) to complete the paper-work that the county needed to cut the check. Well worth the effort. You have to be persistent and patient.
Most of the counties I found funnel the grants through a community action partnership program. My Community Action Partnership program also helped me cover my transportation cost for August too by giving me a gift card for gasoline. Not bad.
