Car Insurance..

Does anyone know if the car has to be in your name for you to have insurance on it? I'm not sure how it works. Example: Parents buy you a car but don't want you on their insurance, so can you buy the insurance in your own name?

Not in Florida. Here you insure the car and listed drivers. If you drive the car more than once a month you have to be on the policy.

My oldest son is not on my AIG policy and cannot drive my vehicles. I am on his policy and can drive his.

You know how Florida is, get caught without Insurance and you are an honest citizen, you lose the license. Have an acident and you are really screwed.

Yeah well my parents just don't want me on their insurance for obvious reasons but the car is going to be titled in their name so that was why I asked So I guess we'll have to get me on theirs if we want to do it

AIG raised my rates to 9208.00 per year with him as a new driver on my policy. He has "hard luck, Ins." now with Seminole Casualty for 2100.00 per year. Mine went back to 3000.00 per year. For those who don't live down here, no comments about getting ripped off, etc... these rates are the norm in SoFla. that's why graphic is asking.

Well I can still get insurance thru Alabama too so I might go that route, since it is a lot cheaper. Plus registration is cheaper as well :P

I learned something last summer about car insurance you might wanna check on also.

Hubby had already moved so he went ahead and changed the registration on his truck to the new state. We didn't even think to notify our insurance agent as we didn't trade vehicles or anything like that. Several months later, when I was changing the rest of our autos, I found out that our Missouri auto insurance would not have covered us if he had had an accident after the new state registration. The Missouri underwriting laws did not allow for coverage to extend to a vehicle with out of state registration. The insurance agent told me we had gotten lucky. We really shoulda gotten seperate insurance on the truck in the new state when we changed the registration.

If the car has Alabama tags/registration, you may need Alabama insurance as well.

Well yeah that's how my car is right now. (I'm a student so I can say my residency is AL because that is where my parents main house is..even though they are always on vacation) I just didn't want to have to drive to AL to get my tags registered..cause its a nice 8 hour drive. So if i have to I guess I shall. Most insurance (I've had progressive geico and AIG) requires you to be licensed in the state to get insurance for the state, ALSO must have a drivers license in the state before you can register there obviously. So I would have to get a FL driver's license. Which is cheaper than paying for gas to al.. but oh well what can ya do

Insurance goes by the vin #, you don't have to own the car or have it registered to you. But insurance companies frown upon more than one policy on the same vehicle, and many states dmv requires the owner to carry his/her own insurance policy. But technically speaking you can obtain an insurance policy on any vehicle you have a vin # for.

Didn't your insurance agent find out about the move when you submitted your address change? When I moved from one location to another in the same county, I had to change the address on my policy and that affected my premiums. I'm sure it would be important if you moved from one state to another. Boise, Idaho, for example, probably has different premiums than New York City.

Hubby was unemployed and got a new job outa state. He moved months ahead of the rest of the family. We hung around so son could graduate High School, and to try and sell the house. The "family" moved to the new state before school started last fall.

When the whole family moved is when I notified the Insurance agent of the change in status. That's when I found out about the other stuff to do with Hubby's truck and insurance. It was actually in idle conversation that it came out Hubby had already changed registration. That's when our agent told me our MO insurance didn't extend coverage to vehicles registered outa state.

Like I said I'm a student. I don't think it matters as much. Plus I don't have an "agent" really because I did all mine online so I didn't have a guy inparticular.

My insurace just came down from $400 a month in 2004 to $300 in 2005 and $200/mo. end of 2005 to now...I had a DUI back in 2003...I have a six month policy right now due to tickets coming off my record in the next month...but Florida is not cheap in general...we have the most uninsured, drunk, cracked out drivers on the road.

I learned my lesson. I wish everyone else would take the class they put you in after a DUI...this class should be taken when you get issued a Florida license.

The highest speed between Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key is 45 mph. My island is 25-35... I now panic when I have to drive off the island.
