Whether you're on FB, Myspace, or just breathing air & not even ever touched a computer (this applies to one of my family members), youre information is still available online.

If you've ever used a credit/debit card or had your driver's license or I.D. card scanned, your information is online whether you like it or not.

    We're all 1984'd these days even though it's 2010.

I disagree that FB and myspace are that dangerous. Just consider the info public. If you don't want people to know where you live don't put that info up there. All that's required is an email address and you can get disposable ones from hotmail, gmail, yahoo.

The fundamental mistake I see people making is hiding behind "friends only." I recommend it--and chosing one's "friends" carefully, but that is NOT private. It's just like real life: once you tell a "secret" to one friend, it's not really a secret any more.

And it's worse because, like email, it is "in writing."

And obviously if you know people are out there trying to find you... odds are that hot girl wanting to be your "friend" is some sort of investigator. Probably not hot, probably not female.

There is a thread around here about some woman who before filing bought a bunch of stuff... talked about it on facebook... and didn't list it in her filings. It's not that her creditors or the DOJ cruised her facebook.... a "friend" turned her in.

Simply put, don't put anything on the net that you don't want your creditors or the government to know. That hardly precludes using the sites at all.
