help,i was robbed by a machine!

i just wondered if this has happened to anyone else.at our bank,of course the atm machine is located outside.the temperature was about 20 out.the day we went to get money from the atm machine.when we tried to get money.you could hear the machine working.but it did not give any money out.so, yes we where robbed by the atm machine. it sure deducted the money from our account,of course. we reported it to the bank though they are never in a hurry to get you your money back.it doesnt make sense when they have cameras watching your moves.that they take so long to give you your money back.so has this happen to anyone else?and what did you do?and last how long did you have to wait for your money?also reported it to the police that day.the bank was closed.hated to see anyone else end up that way too.

We had this happen at a Bank One ATM a few years back. We notified the bank and it was fixed within a couple of days.

Years ago I made a $60 withdrawal from an ATM at my local bank. The machine spit out two new $20 bills and a $2 bill!! I went right inside to report it, and they gave me a $20 in exchange for the $2 bill.

I also know someone who while traveling made an ATM withdrawal and the machine just kept spitting out $20 bills, well beyond what he had withdrawn. Something like $400 instead of the $40 he had asked for. Nervous, he took off but returned a few hours later to make another "withdrawal" but the machine had OUT of ORDER displayed on the screen this time. He never heard boo about his first withdrawal

I withdrew $500 from my ATM and the same thing happened, you could hear the machine working and just as it was about to give me the money it told me there was an error and closed. The bank had debited my account the amount. I called my bank and they had it corrected within a couple of days. This sort of thing happens often. When they balance the machine it will be out of balance the amount they stiffed you.

Wow. I never had that happen at all. (Knock on wood.) But I always count my cash in full view of the camera.

            happened to my husband...
went to one atm,and wanted to take out $200...it says there was an error...
went to a second one,and same thing error...
            went to a 3rd one,guess what ? error...
he did in all 5 banks, before he gave up
we were banking with a CU ,and the banks he tried to withdrawl was not CU.

and when we received the bank statement,$1000 was withrdrawn...the CU told us,we had withdrawn the money..even though our daily limit was $300...thank god we had the receipts...
it took 60 days for them to fix it.
couple of month later, hubby tried to withdraw $100,and he did it from the CU atm.no money came out.but later on,found out that the money had been withdrawn from the account.they refused to give us back the money....we closed the account.
it happened to a friend of ours, and he got his money back..

When an error like this occurs, always save any receipt that comes out, document the time and place, contact the bank that has the ATM immediately and also your bank if the ATM bank is different. That way you have the situation covered as each transaction can be traced. To remedy an error such as this, it takes the bank a while because anyone can state that they did not receive money when they did (there is always the fraud issue).

It should also be noted that you should NEVER DEPOSIT CASH via atm.

There are stories of people who file BK, make a cash-atm deposit to a bank they have a loan with, and that deposit goes poof.

I once got a counterfit $20 bill from an ATM it was a bad looking counterfit at that. Since this was a Friday night and Monday was a holiday I had to wait until Tuesday to go to the bank. They took it said oops sorry put it in a folder amd gave me another $20.

Chase has one of those new fancy machines that you can do cash and check deposits. It always makes me nervous but the lines at 4 pm are insane.

omg....I only ever ONCE in my life deposited cash at an ATM. At my own bank. Only because it was A LOT of cash and I was more scared of carrying around that much cash and the bank was closed. I had a friend with me with a camcorder. We counted the cash in the envelope and then recorded the entire process of depositing it, with a running narrative the whole time. It was quite a production! I also never needed it, thank goodness!

My friend works as the ATM Co-Ordinator with a large Credit Union. She is in charge of ATM's when they breakdown, need more money, or when a customer screws up the transaction, etc. She told me that it is logged when you had your transaction, and as soon as the do a balance of that ATM, you will get your money back. It will show an overage at their end. It happens, it is a machine and machines screw up!!

Never happened to me and come to think of it, I'm surprised it hasn't, especially with the winters here!

Deposited cash through the ATM once and it was the night before my honeymoon. My brother was supposed to come pick up the cash and deposit it but never showed (ahem....someone obviously continued the party). I didn't want to take all that cash out of the country and had to leave for the airport at 4am. The ATM was my only choice!

I found that the best response is to write a note with a Sharpie saying "MACHINE NOT WORKING" and tape it on the screen. You might have to come back a few times to replace it, but (1) banks make money from ATMs and (2) the bank will be fielding calls from a lot more people than you. The bank responds way faster, and hopefully yours is still the last transaction. And you might save the next person from getting robbed!
