    Job Update

    For anyone who was wondering...

(Quick Recap-I started a temp/perm position Aug. 1. Since I found the position thru an agency, I had to work for them for 13 weeks X 40 hours before the company could hire me directly, else they'd pay a big fee. The company was moving an office to this area from out of state, and several transferred down but they needed 2 more people right away, didn't want to deal with looking for people when they got down here.) It was always my understanding that they intended to keep the 2 permanently, and I was NEVER treated differently than the 'employees' except that I didn't have a key to the office.

Anyhow, as of Monday 10-31 I completed my 13X40 hours. I hadn't heard anything yet, so I emailed my contact at the agency. She explained that they weren't even able to discuss permanent employment til th 13X40 had passed, and she was sure they would soon as she understood they were happy w/ me.

As of this week, still nothing. My manager was out of town on Thur/Friday for training on new software they're going to be using come January. I didn't want to be the one to bring it up, but I do need to know where I stand, KWIM? (Plus I expect to make a little more $$, and will start the clock on being eligible for benefits once hired.) So I emailed a short note, just stated I needed to know where I stand. This is what I got back:

I am very sorry for my lack of communication on my part. I am very very
satisified with your work, probably overly satisfied with your work.
You are a very good worker. I could not have made this transition as
smooth without all of your help.
I would be more than delighted to offer you a position at XXXXX if you
    are willingly to accept.

We'll cover the details on Monday!

Thanks! I felt better once I learned that they couldn't even discuss a job til after 13 weeks. (My initial thought was that I'd be working for them the day following 13 weeks, which turns out not to be the case.)

I was afraid to bring it up-didn't want to hurt my chances, you know?

Things are moving forward for us. By next May, DH will start earning paid time off. (Until he has been there for a year, he doesn't get paid if he misses time.) It will probably be a while before I can 'use' PTO, but it will be good to have that cushion again!

That's good to hear Staci. I work for a company which heavily uses temps and many times, they have come to me and asked "How do I get hired here?" I usually reply "Prayer" because usually they don't stand a chance in hell of getting hired. Especially what with our sales off by 50%

More then once I "Loaned" a pack of smokes, or $5-$10 to one for gas money. Most temps are $7.50 and some are $8 (A few make $10-$12 but that's using forklift equipment) I make a bit less then the high amount I typed and right now, it's shaky as I'm at odds with the supervisor (I cannot respect someone who automatically believes their favorites and won't ask questions first) and so he's looking to get rid of me

Sad fact is, it's LOADS cheaper to have temps (Lower pay, sometimes harder workers as they try and impress upper levels to get hired) and there's no limit on time. We've had some temps here over 3 YEARS and their pay is about 25 cents more then some others...It sickens me how some companies can be so abusive, but legally can do such.

I don't know how true it is, but I was told by my contact at the agency that they deal mainly w/ companies looking to fill permanent spots and that their fee is hefty because they take responsibility for screening, background check, etc.

I work in accounts payable for an apartment management company, and its certainly not a job where I'm irreplaceable but I do like to think that they wouldn't easily find someone better at my job than me! (And I have 2/3 of the workload as the other a/p person is only working a partial schedule due to chemotherapy treatments.)

A million congrats, Staci. You worked hard for it and were rewarded. Couldn't happen to a nicer person who has given so much to this Forum. I am extremely happy for both of your situations.

That is great Stac... Wal Mart, Target and most notably Motorola have laid off here in Sunrise. Motorola shipped jobs overseas, the typical shaft to a willingly loyal workforce. Wal Mart & Target have been told by our local beareaucrats in Building and Zoning and harrassing and bothering and justifying their existence that no accomodation can be made because even though the buildings would pass Mexican standards by a mile they are utterly unsafe for humans here and that because of bearaeucratic, uppity botolny jigglysplat and all high unbelievable fines and imprisonment and tickets and violations the workers will have to find other jobs for maybe more than a year until the all high hidalgo of Sunrise grand poobah of business killers, the building inspector says its ok. Special Accomodations to keep our citizenry employed when they've been without paychecks and to keep essential local merchants who feed off of these stores in money?????? Because of the CAT 1 Hurricane that stiil has power down in some of areas and that sent gas pumps rolling like bowling balls down the street!

God Bless and may you be in health and prosper as your soul prospers! And may the business that employees you that pays the taxes that sustain our Government and pays for the defense of the Country prosper. And I mean it. I have the utmost respect for those who take risks and for those who are in the private business world.

                      Temp to Perm

                      Congratulations! Always a good feeling!

When I went back to work last year, I put loads of resumes on Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com...etc., went through the papers & faxed resumes...nothing...of course it's Florida (sunshine pay factor)...

I ended up going to some temp agencies, most were a joke so I went to the mother of all agencies....Kelly Services

They hooked me up with the property management firm I work for on Longboat Key. It was the first assingment I went on & I got hired on immediately as my company totally gets their employees through Kelly. I just kept working after the 90 period, got a 1.50 raise at the turnover. Started last Nov. 29th. My first "year" will be up February 28th and I hope to get a raise. But, due to the job market in Bradenton/Sarasota area...pay is low....lots of people looking for employment but not a lot of places you can grow and want to stay employed with.

Again, congratulations and I would definitely recommend anyone looking for a job to go through Kelly Services!

When I lived in Oklahoma City, I got my job through Express Personnel. It was a temp-hire deal like Staci's. My starting wage with the company was $13 per hour, but I saw the invoice from Express one day! They were paying Express $24 per hour for me! Yikes!

The good thing was that I knew I had lots of leverage when we negotiated the offer for them to hire me full time. They knew I knew, and it worked to my advantage.

Too bad three years later I married a poor sailor, got knocked up, moved 2,000 miles, and had to file bankruptcy, lol.
