Credit: Use it or lose it!

    Received this in today's mail...

"Thank you for being a valued customer and for choosing Chase. We value your business and appreciate the opportunity to serve your financial needs.

In a recent review of your account, we noticed that you have used only a limited amount of your credit line with us. We believe this may indicate that your current credit line is higher than required to meet your usage and/or spending needs. To better align your account with those needs, we have adjusted your credit line to $5,500.

While we believe this new line is more than what you will use based on past usage patterns, please note that if you have made purchases or written checks that result in your balance being greater than this new credit line, you will have 45 days from the date of this letter to make payments to bring your balance below your credit line. If your account is overlimit, after this 45-day period, your account may be assessed an overlimit fee and the overlimit status could result in your receiving notice of an APR change on your account.

If your needs have changed, please contact us at the toll-free number found on the back of your card so we may re-evaluate our decision with the most current information available. Your business is important to us, and our advisors are available 24 hours a day to assist you.

    Sincerely,

    Deb Walden
    Executive Vice President

This is the original $2K Providian Visa I got about a year after my BK7 discharge. When Providian was purchased by WaMu they raised my limit to $5K. When Chase acquired WaMu they raised my limit to $11K. Thing is, I keep a zero balance and actually force myself to charge $100 or so every now and then, just to keep the account open. I guess Chase didn't like the fact they aren't making any money off me, so they halved my credit limit to $5,500. No big deal to me at all, but wanted to share it with you all so that you know what the fricking CC companies are up to these days!

Yes it's been known and suspected for some time now that when the new rules starting going into effect that the CC companies would be bailing out on people.

My Amex simply up and closed my account a couple months back; I hadn't used it in 2 years and it had a zero balance that entire time.

Last year, I had to ARGUE with Discover card to close an account that was open in 1986 that was joint with my father. I probably had not used the account since 1990, if at all, when it was newly opened.

I honestly couldn't even remember the card.

They gave me such a run-around to close the account, it was rediculous!

What banks are trying to do is reduce risk in any way, shape or form and one thing they are doing is what occurred to you. They are also closing credit cards that have not been used in a while as occurred with me. Plus they are losing money if you don't carry a balance so they reduce the risk of any loss that may occur by reducing credit lines or closing cards in case the card holder loses their job and utilizes all that credit and defaults.

They can do anything they basically want as to interest rates, credit lines, etc. and it's all in that fine print in the brochure or statement that comes with the credit card.

Paradoxically, I accepted a deal from Sears that was too good to pass up. I had their card with a $3K limit and I had not used it in at least 2 years. Then they had a wonderful appliance sale and the exact smooth-top range I had been dreaming of for a while was on sale for $200 off the regular price. When I went to check it out, they offered me "no interest/no payments" for 6 months AND free delivery, installation and haul-away of the old stove.

I of course paid it off entirely in 4 months. Sears "rewarded" me by upping my credit limit to $5K!!!

What, a Credit Card Company Being DISHONEST? My Stars!

This sort of thing is happening across the board. Everyone that I know personally, even people with good income and a perfect payment history, with a credit card has had some sort of action taken, either a rate increase, cut credit line, or closed account, either for a silly reason (such "the economy") or no reason at all.

Aren't you glad to see the "credit markets improving and credit flowing more easily" as Bernanke has been saying...

Oh, one other thing to add.. if BK might be in your future, I would be careful reading advice to "use it or lose it"... a sudden change in behavior within 90 days of bankruptcy can really screw up your chances of having a successful one.

That's true. I should have named the thread "Credit POST-BK: Use it or lose it."
