So I thought I'd share my most recent WF debacle.
I can't close my account with them until after my BK. So I've kept a minimal amount in there -- like $20 -- until I can close it officially.
The other week, we sold a couple things on eBay. I used my PayPal debit card to buy some groceries. I also used it at a rental car place since I don't have a usable credit card and didn't want to tie up my "real" debit card with the hold.
I'm going to use pretend numbers to make the math easy here, but basically, this is what happened...
Start with $250 in PayPal account.
Buy $100 worth of groceries on Sunday.
Use PP debit at Hertz on Monday morning for a rental that was PREPAID WHEN WE RESERVED IT. I figured they'd hold $50 or something.
Hertz holds $200.
Charge from Sunday's grocery purchase goes through AFTER the rental from Hertz has held the $200.
Since I only have $50 available when the grocery charge goes through, PayPal accesses my "backup" funds which happens to be my WF account.
PayPal hits my WF for $50. Naturally, I go negative AGAIN.
WF balance is now -$30. And, oh yes, they charge me a $35 overdraft fee for the privilege.
Then WF decides, "Well, maybe we shouldn't have allowed the transaction to go through!" So they reverse it and charge me another $35 fee for NSF. So this has now cost me $70 but the original $50 is back in my account.
Well, eventually the Hertz hold is released from my PayPal and there's plenty of money in there. But even though the original $50 charge was reversed by WF, I'm still negative from the two $35 fees.
So I move just enough money from my PayPal to put my WF back in the black.
Now this is where it gets fun...
Evidently, PayPal has a habit of re-attempting the original transfer 3-5 business days after a failed attempt.
So - you guessed it - even though there was now no need at all to transfer the money from my WF since PayPal had settled down and all holds were released, PayPal once again debits my WF account for the $50 that was reversed a week ago.
Again, I go into the red. And again, I'm charged $35 for the overdraft and $35 for the NSF when the charge is reversed.
So I call PayPal and beg them - PLEASE stop hitting my WF account! You don't need the money! There's a positive balance in there now!
Then I call WF. It's like talking to a freakin' brick wall.
So I'm out $140 in fees this month alone.
I'm sure I somehow deserve this. I learned my lesson after the first $70 in fees. But to wake up this morning and have it happen all over again?!?!?
I don't know who I hate more now - PayPal for attempting to draw funds that it didn't need just b/c the first attempt was reversed, Hertz for holding $200 on a rental that was PREPAID, WF for charging $140 in fees and not being willing to refund them, or myself for getting into this position in the first place.
So all the money I made on eBay is basically gone in fees.
I freakin' hate Wells Fargo because they're the easiest target.
That is all.
