I just heard that CA is considering taxing retirees that moved out of their state by making them pay taxes on their retirements that they earned in CA!
What a crock!
I retired early in 1993 from US Civil Service and moved to AZ. I could not wait to get out of CA and I was born and raised there!
I paid my taxes for that year, but only a partial year by law.
I got a letter and then phone calls from the CA state Franchise Tax Board telling me I owed money for the rest of 1993 and subsequent years.
I told them I was not about to pay state taxes in two states based on income received in another state regardless of the source and told them what they could do with themselves.
They then threatened to attach my assets. I told them if I did that to us that the survivors were going to read about the results in the papers.
Don't buy into this if you have left CA or any state and retired elsewhere.
It took the feds some 5 years to rule that the states (there were some 13 or so at the time that were bullying folks that had moved to another state) into paying while they lived out of state.
Ca is desperate and they will take your monies if you let them. Don't let them bully you if this comes around!
The bad news was that for the people that paid CA and the other states income taxes on that money they had earned in the state was that they did not get the money they had paid in back!
If they do this again don't pay if you live out of state folks. It's already been determined they can't do it and it's just not right.
