...is it me or are the school systems completely out of touch with the economy? Never mind the endless fundraisers that we all deal with but I was totally flabbergasted by a letter I received home from my 4th grader yesterday.
His school is hosting an all day 4th grade event (never mind that they should have started planning weeks ago; the first I heard of it was 10 days ago). It's lovely and generous of them, I don't like to knock the PTO, people who volunteer, etc. I try to go on field trips, etc. whenever I can.
But the letter states that they "are asking parents to send in two items each per child from the list below for your child's dinner (remember this is for 4 classes)" Um, isn't 4 classes almost 80 kids? And there are 22 items on the list...80 parents being asked? Already, the math doesn't make sense or the letter isn't coherent. Or I'm just blonde and don't understand.
I was "assigned" brownies and pasta salad. Brownies and pasta salad for 80 kids will cost me at least $25.00 - that is if I want to cook. If I don't want to cook, we're talking over $30.00? And what about the poor parent who was assigned (I'm sorry, "asked") to do hamburgers. I would have a stroke if that were me.
I already emailed and phoned the woman in charge to get clarification. Why don't they just ask each family for $5.00? That would be almost $400 for someone to buy the stuff.
And they tell the kids that they're doing this so when you tell your kid that you can't afford it, they look at you like you told me not to do their homework or something.
It just makes me feel like crap.
