I'm sorry, but NO ONE is ever truly prepared for the horrors of war unless they plan "careers" as mercenaries, perhaps. I admire and salute all those who joined the military in these non-draft times, but they, too, were not prepared for the horrors of war. No one is, ever. And no one ever comes out of the experience totally unscathed.

We have no military available to fight yet another war after the excesses of the past 8 years. But I'm willing to bet that the draft won't be coming back anytime soon, because THIS time, there would be no "exemptions" for the politicians and the well-connected. THIS time, it would be everyone, or no one.
Sadly we've coddled the rising generation far more than was done in the 60s.

I seriously doubt that congress would pass a draft that applies equally to everyone, they haven't done that for anything else. Not health care. Not taxes. Not stimulus. Given the powerful lobbies and their own self serving interest they just aren't really capable of passing fair and even laws. I mean these are people who don't write the laws they vote on, don't read the laws they vote on, and generally have almost no clue what they pass.

If a new world war was to break out there is no way we could fight it without a draft. We simply do not get enough volunteers. There was serious discussion 2 years ago about imposing the draft again but then recruitment numbers picked up and they shelved the idea.

The worse case scenario is very bad actually.

    North Korea invades South Korea.
US shifts forces from Iraq and Afghanistan to defend South Korea.
Iran supports Hamas and Hezbullah insurgency in Israel while supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Venezuela invades Columbia with their new Russian hardware.
Russia pushes into Georgia and Ukraine.
Iran then uses a nuke to destroy Tel Aviv, Israel. Then a conventional army sweeing through Syria invades northern Israel.
North Korea uses a Nuke to strike at the US Japanese bases which are being used to support the defense of South Korea.
United States retaliates which causes China to become involved on the side of North Korea.
Pakistan and India each move to reassert their claim on the disputed territories.
Venezuela having gotten nukes from Iran or North Korea uses a few to strike into the heart of the United States, possibly Washington DC itself.

This wouldn't happen right away but could happen in a 3 year timespan.
