Photos and a little news 1

As most of the old timers know i used to be quite outspoken here. Life issues are center stage now so i've laid back alot. My Gov't job is fine and my Florida Retirement Sysytem account is in excellent shape. FRS is still the number one in the Country and her assets are holding. Early on I opted not to succumb to the temptation of converting to the investment side and pretnding to be my own counselor. I left my funds in the retirement plan and in the hands of those who control the Governors, judges , etc... funds. That proved an excellent idea. My wife because she works for the State and not the County but in the same plan had to make an immediate choice (unlike Miami Dade Employess who have multiple, no time-constraint choices ) and opted for the investment because she will not have near the 30-35 years i will likely have ( I am at 27 now). She invested in Agro and Bio-fuels diversely and has lost only .02 this year. She is looking to adjust that. Overtime cuts have removed about $25,000.00 per year from our income, it was dependable yearly, therefore considered normal, but we are holding and not behind.

Ups and downs with children. Some problems with son number 2, but connections got him a reprieve, a year and a day, which the State wanted reprieve with adjutication withheld and time served ( a $7.00 vitamin bottle from Wal-Mart) along with violating a probation on a 3rd degree felony, literally, opening an unoccupied car door and closing it. No damages, no restitution but unfortunately in Plantation acres, a pricey community of rare, one acre lots and 6000 square foot homes. In my neighborhood the cops would not have even considerd it, we've seen that proven with worse crimes. He did 45 days in hell in the cell with a murderer and one 19 year old boy facing two life sentences for armed robbery and screaming and door slamming were constant. Cure, he is back in school and getting jhis diploma, no problems whatsoever. He could heave gotten it all exponged from any records search but dropped the ball, oh well...

Son number three, USMC, doing great, going to Afghanistan in April. Doing his favorite thing, working in the Armory.

Son number one in College, away, doing very, very well and WORKING!!

My wife works for the State. She is doing excellent and despite not so great pay loves her work. we get alot of trips with the job and her training is great. She works in a department that does very important work and feels that she is helping people who have been victimized by to say the least crimes that violate people just short of rape (to me worse than murder). Her reputation has reached the top and she is doing wonderful. Because of her performance she is sent for training above her pay grade and studies at home regularly. She has found a niche and is perfectly suited to the great, small team of comitted people she works with. There are some Government employees who go beyond to help people and do their jobs.

    Enough absentee updates:

On one recent trip (I always tag along at my own expense, the rooms are in five star hotels for which the State gets at Days Inn rates in bulk with no "double, single" baloney), we pay it then get reimbursed, I went to Ocala National Forest alone for the day. I was told by co-workers that it was a dead stick, ugly scrub forest fit only for fishing and ATV's. I found that in some ways that was true, along all the well worn paths. But off the path I found a different story in the tiny blooms, dead logs along trails on which I saw not one person but were carefully prepared and meandered for enough miles so that I got way to alone given my blood pressure issues. I decided the risk to see the end of those trails outweighed medical considerations and found that beauty is in the aperture setting on the camera and on what my eyes alone percieve as beauty. Please enjoy a walk through the trails:

NOTE: all expenses for me on these trips are mine alone, taxpayers pay none of mine and no extras for the wife, just hotel, meals and per diem for her and mileage which they calculate from house to hotel to conference and back home, any extra's are from my pocket.

    Ocala, Florida National Forest
Along Spring Boils Trail, you will note that one photo is a bubbling spring, thousands in the are bubbling up clear, beautiful water through the white, fine, sand

    Lichens growing on a log

Having been here since this Section was started I can tell you this is exactly what this section was started for was started for. I remember the statement made when it was started. General talk is not for BK talk. BK threads are moved for that. This section started to get our minds off of BK and have some relaxed talk. Please get your info straight before you judge please. You are new and definitely in the wrong on this one. Not trying to be mean but excercise some caution before you write please.

I don't think we need a travel log here. But that's my opinion.

What one person thinks, don't care. There are personal friendships here that go way beynd the user id's, to phone calss and tangible help. But sometimes we lose touch and some old users only access the site to lurk and not post. Everyone who has been here over the yearsknows that i have shared alot of photos on the forum. This is the first complaint I have had in five years. For that matter we don't need a General talk Forum either. enough said

Most importantly, glad the kids are doing better.

Yes, there still are many morons that join the forum.

Great photos Robivi. Yes, I remember some of your other photos too. Also, lazar or HRx, cant recall which one, but they shared some photos from some vacations a couple of years ago that were nice. Glad to see you and your family are doing well. I guess the train industry holds up pretty good during economic downturns

What kind of camera and what aperture settings?

I played around with aperture adjustments last year during july 4th fireworks shows, and it made for some pretty interesting photos.

And you're right, this section is for things outside of bk related discussions which can include just about anything, like you said to take people's minds off of stressful decision making. Cant see why anyone would complain, but if that is the case, they can also choose to not click the link that opens the thread.

My kids were on the "I hate Florida" train for awhile and i admit it to falling into it also. My youngest and i determined to change our attitudes and began exploring the place several years before he left. He now asks me to send him pix of Publix Supermarkets for him and his Florida buddies. they all say that of all the "things" they miss Publix the most. Publix was our "movie night trip" when the boys were small. Publix Ice Cream (still two for five bucks at times), Publix pizza and Publix Soda. So that place now holds special memmories for them.
I began taking pictures of merchandise with diffusers, lighting, home made sets and all about ten years ago when we opened our high end online toy store, which did very well in 1998- 2001, then died in 2002-03. By that time I was hooked on photography. I recently sold all of my Minolta's on ebay because the cost of film and experimentation was to high given my income reduction. I now use a Canon 8mp I5IS, one step below an SLR. I hope next year to get back into a digital SLR. No film ever again. ALOT has happened this year including the loss of a lifelong friend, my health issues since April and the boy dealing with the jail issue, which to me is shameful and the young one choosing the Marines, his dream since he visited Shiloh Battlefield at age 5 and bolted from the slow moving car yelling "a cannon, a cannon". I still heve one photo of him runnuing and his mother chasing him. He declared that same year in "show and tell" that he would be a Marine. Later on on a test he was asked "who was at the Alamo" and wrote "John Wayne", no joke. He loves working on weapons, he is a nerd and has accepted that after trying to fit in with a certain crowd at school. Once he got comfortable with what he was he made many friends of "nerd quality" and actually became popular with his classmates. By the time he was 17 he was on a first name basis with customer service at remington Arms (doing repairs to his own collection, ammo always in my safe)

The oldest is a dead broke Rabbinical student (Morristown NJ) working for $100 bucks a week on campus whom we help obviously (we are not Jewish) and is happy, jolly, close to me as always and studies constantly. He is the most conteneted and likely, wise person i have ever known. he is a blessing to anyone and very firm in his commitment. he is in his third year. He has an amazing outlook on life and a tolerance that astounds me. A good and honest heart that I love dearly.

I love playing with the aperture and shutterspeeds now, it brings out color.

Beautiful photos - I especially like the third one down! And speaking of travel, I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences that were not expensive, where they were able to get away for a few days and relax. Any ideas? We may have a few days in May where we could possible get free to go somewhere.
