You might want to consider plants that will do double duty. Rose plants are thorny, and some varieties can grow pretty big in the southern US (the milder winters don't hold them back like harsher winters in the north can). You may also think about a close grouping of raspberry or blackberry canes. I think some varieties do have thorns, and they can grow pretty thick in a few years. And you get delicious berries!I think of my bankruptcy less as "walking away" and more as "gnawing my leg off to get out of a trap".
