    Kentucky Ice Storm

    Hello folks,
Days without electric and still ice all around here, but we finally have electric again after our BIG ICE STORM.....

I've seen several ice storms here and up North in my life time, but this one was the BIGGEST, and worst.....

Some of the branches on the tress were 3/4 to an inch thick with ice. Many, many downed trees, so not much traveling going on.

This morning there were still 660,000 people here in KY without electric, but hopefully today most cities will be back on and the rural areas tomorrow or Sunday.

Now we have to deal with the flooding issues here. All the wash off from ice, snow, and rain that came thru has caused a wave of flooding also.

I was warm and toasty during it all, kerosene heater and fireplace used, and cooked out on the grill. I'm a survivor........

So good to be back with you all............................

I have friends and family there who still do not have electricity - and some don't have water either. Some live way out in the country. They are afraid they may not have electric for up to 2 weeks.

      I'll second that survivor thing.

Your post makes me appreciate living in Florida. All we have is a hurricane now and then. 'Hub

Word today is some rural areas will be without electric and water for another week or more. They can't pump water at the water plants without the electric, so NO WATER EITHER.

Schools, business have all been closed down since the storm. Lots of roads completely impassable due to trees.

Lots of National Guard sent in to help and lots of utility companies from other states are here too.

Elderly were picked up to take to safe places to be warm and well fed and out of harms way.

I'm glad to be back in commission again but also feel sorry for all those that's still DOING WITHOUT...... It's hard on young folks who are not survivors.......

Really cold nights coming back in again this next week and another major snow fall next week. Hopefully no more ice......

Hope they get it all back to normal before the next snow storm.......

I lived in Kentucky back in the mid 70's - '76 and '77. Can't remember which winter it was, but one January we had like more than a foot of snow and the schools were closed for a month (this was a town where they almost never closed for snow). But I think we always had electricity. The problem is the ice + snow + more ice + more snow. Makes the trees really heavy and they break, fall over onto power lines, etc. It also makes for VERY hazardous driving. I saw where some people were burning there fences to get heat. They said the cabinets would be next if it didn't get fixed. Sad.

              Glad you are okay Minny

I've been somewhat outraged at the federal response to this emergency.

If George W. Bush was still president and FEMA had been going this slow, then it would be all over the media. They all called him racist for his slow response to a national disaster. Now mostly a white area has been hit and the president is black and we don't see the media calling him racists because of the slow response. Heck you've barely heard a peep how it took over a week just to get any FEMA workers in the area and then those were so inadequately provisioned they couldn't work for another few days.

I think its a big outrage myself, to many folks giving Obama a pass for many of the same mistakes Bush did in my opinion, and I certainly haven't seen that politics of change he promised.

Sorry for venting but I do feel that FEMA had a responsibility to have been on site the moment the ice stopped falling. This ice storm may not quite be as devastating as a hurricane but it certainly is a major national disaster. One wonders who well they'll respond if Mount Redoubt does indeed give way to a major eruption.

JR you are very right on that, i live i arkansas, we were hit very hard last week with the worse storm maybe ever, part of the kentucky system. We had over an inch and three quarters of ice, devestation everywhere. We were told they have given 5 million bucks but this is only for city gov. and businesses, NOT INDIVIDUALS. FEMA rolled in here and there is no 'evidence' they are here, kind of crazy

                  Deck is stacked against us

You ain't seen nuthin yet. Wait till they put out a trillion pieces of worthless paper into our economy.

Change that's it, CHANGE. So what do we have? Every cabinet officer is same old same old, then two are tax cheats, one being now the head of IRS.

When Katrina came in, there was ample warning. The Mayor sat on his thumb and the Governor was absent in her mind. The pres got the blame. I still see on I95 bridge people setting on their a$$e$ waiting for Guvmnt to come to their aid. If I were stuck for some reason in that situation, there is a road, I would WALK, east or west, but I would not sit. What copout that was.

When will people wise up? We are having change all right. 'Hub

                  P.S. fair tax!!

The line crews from the power company's can not get to the power line with all the trees down in the roads.
I drove out to Owensboro this weekend and there are trees still coming down.

It almost makes you wish you could get some of that global warming that's supposed to be coming right now.

A week ago we got hit with ice

I'm in Arkansas too and didn't have power until Sunday afternoon. But it was really great to see how many out-of-town and out-of-state power companies came in to help. We do have many people who won't get power back for a couple of weeks - thanks to hundreds of downed power lines.
When power came back on - a bunch of neighbors (including me) applauded the power crews as they were leaving.
As for the Federal Government - nada!

In my area it never snows but now I'm thinking twice about wishing for it to snow here. Specially ice storms.

I've never experienced an ice storm here in California. Plenty of earthquakes though in my lifetime.

No ice storms or earthquakes here, but I live in South Florida and I'm a Hurricane Andrew survivor. We had no electricity for 7 weeks and no phone lines for 13 weeks. And back then, 1992, cell phones weren't as common as today. They were big, heavy and expensive. And even those who had them, had major difficulty getting a signal because the satellite towers went down with the hurricane as well.

I feel for those in AR and neighboring states who had no power in the middle of winter. Hope you are staying warm!
BK 7 filed and discharged in 2004 after 30+ years of perfect credit. Life HAPPENS.
