    School loan deferment until 2017?!

Ok, this is weird. I have student loans and was sent an automated email response saying my loan has been put into deferment and payment isn't due until 2017.

While I am currently back in school part time, I never even applied for the deferment.

Any deferments I've had to BEG for in the past were only good for a year.

Do you think I should contact the loan servicer about this?

I have no idea where the 2017 date came from!?

I'm in school part-time too (go at nite). This is good cause' the interest rate is lower and gives us a chance to pay-down. Deferrments also don't negatively affect credit reports. I didn't ask for mine either. It must be some new law about it being automatic. I believe the school reports it.

By all means contact the loan company about this. It sounds like a scam or a sales pitch for you to consolidate/switch your loans.

The fact that you didn't get anything in writing, but an EMAIL, should make you suspicious from the get go.

Call the loan officer for your peace of mind. And please, let us know how it turns out.

It really isn't a scam but call your lenders anyway. I called my gov't subsidized lender which is how I found out. I didn't bother calling SM but they followed suit which shocked me because it was the first time EVER SM acted like a real student loan. But again, not complaining. I'll take the lowered interest rates as a good opportunity to pay down.

Whatever it is, just make sure you get it in writing, meaning something that comes through the US Post Office. Maybe it's me, but I don't trust email for something of this magnitude!
