Wal-Mart worker dies after crowd rushes store

NEW YORK - A Wal-Mart worker has died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers shortly after the Long Island store opened Friday, police said. Unconfirmed reports said a pregnant woman also miscarried as the crowd rushed in.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old Wal-Mart worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. ET, an hour after the store opened.

A police statement said a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking him to the ground." The exact cause of death "will be determined by the medical examiner's office," the police stated.

A coworker said the clerk was "bum-rushed by 200 people," according to the New York Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges," said Jimmy Overby. "He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Police added that "a 28-year-old pregnant female was also transported to an area hospital for observation."

Shopper Jessica Keyes told the Daily News that she saw the woman being knocked down near where the worker lay dying.

According to Keys, when paramedics arrived they told the woman that "there's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."

Other shoppers said people kept entering the story as emergency crews attended the woman and store clerk.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead," the Daily News quoted shopper Halcyon Alexander as saying. "People were still coming through."

"They're savages," shopper Kimberly Cribbs said of the crowd. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Police added that three other shoppers " suffered minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals."

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede during the day-after-Thanksgiving bargain hunting, but said a "medical emergency" caused them to close the store.

Yesterday this 34 year old probably enjoyed Thanksgiving with his family, today he is gone because of this.

I think the woman also had a miscarriage.

I hope these thug shoppers have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

If I was the manager I would have locked them all in and arrested those in the beginning of the line for manslaughter but that's just me.

Maybe they got some good bargains.

In some ways, the stores that advertise like this cause people to behave this way. The stores are equally as guilty as the stupid shoppers themeselves.

I know and what gets me the most about this crime is the reasoning behind it. People die unnecessarily everyday but this person died because his killers were preparing for what they and most people think is the true meaning of Christmas. They certainly have it all wrong.

Good. It won't bring the dead back to life but it will be nice if some retailers pay a heavy price for inviting the herds of animals to the stores and inciting riots.

If you were on that line and are reading this then yes you are an animal or worse!!!

I don't see this as the retailers fault. Its the idiots pushing and shoving people and knocking the doors down. If you noticed that target didn't have their 4 or 5 hour sale like they usually do. One of the Targets a friend went to had about 1000 people waiting to get in. I guess WM should charge more so people don't act like idiots trying to save a buck!

Wal-Mart may face a lawsuit but who knows where it will go. They will more likely begin an attack on the clerks actions. Wal-Mart is ruthless and unmoved by this sort of thing. They have the best attorneys you can imagine, they aren't a bit worried, they likely have already jumped on this issue.

The woman did not have a miscarriage. Not that it matters

It was in my local paper, what a horrible thing to happen to someone! What's worse is people continued to shop even though the store was going to close because of the death.

It says alot about our society when this happens.

Disagree Green, just says a lot about some people. For every "person" rushing down the doors, there are probably hundreds that wouldn't.

I thought about this.. I wonder what would have happened to the person that stopped and tried to pick the person up that was knocked down? Of course, I never got up early and lined up outside the stores for anything. I shop a week before Christmas and a couple months before.
