I have calmed down a bit since my earlier post. So here are some of my other gripes:
We have 6 computers that are designated as 'student use only' and one that is considered 'community patron'. My further gripe with security here is that there is no way for us 'evening people' to screen the usage w/o carding the patrons and making sure the 'student machines' are indeed used for legitimate student purposes. The daytime people don't do this.
Meanwhile, there is this one other machine that is tucked out of the way and out of any possible viewing by the personnel. This machine is dedicated to 'community patron' use only. Again, the daytime people don't do this.
Once I discovered this, I have made it a point to walk around the library every so often and notice what is going on where. I have surprised some lurkers now and again doing this. The rules say that we are supposed to be aware of everything that is going on in the library, and if they are not conforming to the rules, ask them to leave. Yeah, right!
I keep complaining; but nothing happens. Oh well, I will keep doing my job, and posting my observations. Maybe when someone is assaulted, the adminsitration will do something better.
Thanks for putting up with me! As ou can tell, I'm not in a really good mood right now.
Thanks again for being there!"To go bravely forward is to invite a miracle."

I used to work at the library on my Community College Campus...we'd have community patrons looking up, *AHEM* inappropriate material, shall we say?
We had one brazen enough to PRINT IT.FILED!: August 11, 2008 * Pre-Filing Fico Score - 643 * 341: October 8, 2008 * Last Day for Objections: December 7, 2008

That is so not true.
I of course do not know the answer other than having every person on the internet obtain a valid drivers license in order to drive it. That does not guarantee a safe internet either.
I have used the public pc at the library here and it is pretty tied down to where they trace back anything and every person using it, or at least to the card that was used. That does not help though when the problem is at an actual website, forum, email and god only knows what lurks those dark halls...

One other thought...so what about the IP address? You join a forum and who is to say it is not being sold in a black market by the owner or a moderator?
You visit a website, it now has your IP as a visitor.
The same way people use/sell email address...from there they can figure out everything else such as a real address, name, and lovely satellite camera. IT is so rude and invasive.
A bit different from hacking a pc. Just as dangerous.
hmmm
