    Obama/McCain Debate Last Nite

Ummmm- I have to say - McCain did well. And I'm a democrat.

I really could not believe it when asked about abortion that Obama's first response was that this was 'above his pay grade'.

Cooooooooome-on man. Either you are pro-life or pro-choice. He took a stand later but crappollla what a stupid initial response.

Then again, McCain's response to what constitutes rich = 5 million a yr.....hmmmm.

We are doomed. Let's hope their Vice President pics are decent.

Hmm, I didn't catch that because I didn't tune in until about 1/2 an hour after it started. What exactly did that mean, above his pay grade? I don't get it.

I thought McCain did very well on most questions and I really hadn't expected him to. There were a couple I don't think he really answered though.

I am an independent (was a republican for many years) and there are things I don't like about either candidate. The only thing I do know is that I do not want four more years like the last eight.

I am still undecided. And I agree, we are doomed.

If the Constitution would allow a 3rd term would you vote for Bush again? Assuming you voted for him in 2000 and 2004.

NO WAY! I am embarrassed to have voted for him twice before. In 2000 I was gung ho. In 2004 I held my nose because I could not imagine the alternative.

Obama could not answer the question "at what point does a baby begin to have human rights?" because he probably knew his real answer would not please that particular crowd. He danced around it, tried to dress it up in fancy lawyer language - and never did actually answer the question. To say it was above his pay grade was not smart and very telling!! A lot of things are gonna be above his pay grade because he is just not ready for the job.

I thought McCain was a lot sharper than I expected and you could tell he knew what he believed. He tells it like it is. Simple and to the point. He did not beat around the bush (no pun intended). He has so much more experience and depth. And he does have a long record of trying to get people to work together - which is what we need. I think the $5 million comment was silly too - but I think he was joking - or trying to. Even he said he would hear about that.

McCain did a better job than I expected him to last night.

Still could never vote for him. Waaaaaaaaay too conservative.

My wife and I are solidly in the Obama Camp.

epiph - as Poorgrammy said, Obama was trying to skirt around the issue. Above my paygrade means 'I'm not qualified to answer this question'. But Poorgrammy is wrong, he ultimately did answer that he was pro-choice. The way he went about dealing with this question initially though pixxed me off. Either you are pro-life, or pro-choice. Don't skirt around it!....around what you believe! As much as I don't like McCain, I'm not liking Obama either. And I was a big Obama supporter in the beginning.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I have never heard that particular phrase but do think it is an odd response.

I don't think Obama speaks well off the cuff and I do wish he would stop saying "um". That is truly annoying even in people I know in my everyday life.

My jury is still out. I am just not sure that I believe McCain and he really, really pissed me off when he was all emphatic about creating an illegal alien worker program in 2006 and he made those really uncalled for lettuce picking remarks. Who the F is he to tell hard working Americans that they cannot handle picking lettuce in Yuma, Arizona for 50 bucks an hour? I'd take that job and I wouldn't even pee on the produce!

It is gonna be very hard to vote on this election. I personally don't like any of the candidates but I have to try to choose the least worse....make sense?

I have to agree. This election will be a much harder choice. I think that my current situation has made me change my thinking a lot when it comes to politics.

I do think they both did a great job, but Mcain does seem to be much more comfortable answering questions quickly. Obama needs to get better at this if he wants to overcome the unexpienced critisism.

The mess Bush and his cronies have gotten us into won't be able to be cleared up in 4 years, or even in 8 years. There's been just too much damage inflicted on every aspect of our life. Whoever wins in November will be a one-termer who won't be able to accomplish anything. He's doomed to fail.

Ep: "above my pay grade" is a very specific phrase for Government employees. All Federal Government employees have pay grades. The Salaried employees have "GS" grades (generally). To say something is "above my pay grade" means that you're not a "Manager" or "higher up". Only a lowly GS-5 or GS-9 would say such a thing. ;)
