    Kids & Shopping...ridiculous comment

I took my kids shopping today. I needed a new pair of shoes. Got them.

I also got my kids each a pair of shoes for school. I spent the whole time arguing with my six year old boy about why I wasn't going to buy him air shoes, or ones with headlights that were $45 each pair and up. The sales clerks were just smiling.

We finally negotiated on a pair of sketchers that were $35.00. My daughters were also $35.00. So $70 total for both kids shoes.

In the past, I've always gone to Payless, but it seems the older they get, the less 'cool' those kind of places are.

Does $35.00 for each kids shoes seem unreasonable?? I don't buy them shoes unless they need them, but considering mine were $50, and will last a year, I guess I am having a guilt trip spending money if I know I can get something that will cover their feet for less, even if they hate them. On the other had, if they hate them, they'll never wear them. Money wasted.

What do you think?? Am I the only one arguing with kids about clothing and shoes?

I usually go to shoe carnival. do you have one? they always have the best deals on name brand shoes & you get the second pair always at half off or maybe better. sometimes the clearance section is pretty good too.

you would pay 35.00 for the first pair & 17.50 for the second pair. you could actually get one more pair of shoes for free if you were buying four.

we can't keep kids on payless shoes forever. payless does not last as long & is definately not cool for school..so that part is normal...

but as for the headlights on the 6 year old, maybe next year..they could run you around forever with stuff like that.

    2 cents

Ha! He wanted wheelies! Fortunately, they don't make them in his size.

And if he wants headlights, I'd be more than happy to duct tape some mini flashlights to his shoes. ;)

I'd be thrilled if sketchers would quit advertising all these cool and unusual shoes.
Headlights don't make you run faster, and wheelies gets you in trouble when your skating down the hall

I was thinking the same exact thing & I was laughing over what it would look like. Mini Flashlight with duct tape. That way you can just put the mini flash light on the next pair of shoes next year & then he can be super cool.

        Make your own fashion.

Sometimes I wish I had a pair of shoes where wheels pop out to get somewhere faster. I would most likely break my face with my luck.

My thought exactly...I'd get a call from school, "your kid cracked his head in the hall"

I need an ER bill...not. I don't see them puppies in his future!

I hate those wheelie shoes. Do you know how many times some kid has almost run me over at walmart or the grocery store? Thank God I don't have boys anymore. We wouldda already had a fight over them. I do love the idea of a mag light taped to them. I can just see it now.

My 8 year old has been hounding us for years over those stupid wheelies! I hate those shoes and I told him he can buy himself a pair when he turns 18. Probably will be the only wheels he can have anyway.

My older boys always get Sketchers- they seem to hold up well and get passed on down so I dont mind paying for them. My hubbie works at Kohl's one day a month so we get the employee discount.

I love back to school shopping "its the most wonderful time of the year".

Just wonderful..right next to Christmas! I'm starting early, I pick up something if I see it on sale.
We have the 'tax free weekend' her right before school, but there are thousands of people out there, you can't find parking, get trampled, everything picked through..just so I can save 8.25 per $100 I spend.
Thanks, no thanks. This is easier on me, and I save just as much as on those 'tax holidays', and my nerves and temper remain level.

I cannot STAND kids turned lose in stores with those g/d shoes. I have had a spinal fusion, and though I am doing quite well, and have been for 13 years, many thanks to God and the Texas Medical Center, I do NOT have alacrity on my feet to be able to spring out of harm's way caused by them and their irresponsible parents! !*C*HFFTTT**!

No you're not the only one arguing with kids about clothes and shoes. My boys have a pair of heely's (wheelie shoes). They respect school policy took out the wheels in school, didn't wear them in stores. Store policys don't allow it. They had to have them and we found them on Ebay. Got them at a very good price and they were thrilled. Yes their rotten!

Now it's time to think about school shoes again. My boys each get about 2 pair of shoes a year. We went to shoe carnival last year and got them their skater shoes, buy one at regular price get one 1/2 off. We probably won't go until after school starts, that way they can see what all the other boys are wearing and we will buy them what they want.

My boys both have their own style now, so no more Walmart clothes. We actually have better luck at Goodwills. Or we have a Gordhams close that carries their style, the prices are fair and they always have a great clearance rack.

What I dread more then anything is the expense of school starting. School registration, $125 a piece, gym uniforms, $10 a piece, school supplies, who knows??, school lunches, $15 a piece a week. So much for free education! I am afraid this year my boys will be school clothes shopping after they are back in school.

You have to pay a registration fee for PUBLIC SCHOOL??? OMG, I would never have thought it. There were times during our bk that it would have been impossible to come up with that, especially with 3 kids that first year.

And here I have griped for years because of the school supply. Each teacher in JR/SR High wants the kid to have their own 3 ring binder for their particular class. And it can never be the 97 cent half inch binder.. no it has t be the big 2-3 inch binder at 3 bucks apiece. Man I used to get one binder and dividers so each class had it's own spot.

Having raised 4 kids, the youngest of which is now 21 and in college, you just have to learn to say the word "no" and actually mean it. If a six year old thinks he/she can get whatever they ask for, that stays with them the rest of their lives and it just becomes worse. Moms/Dads today are so afraid not to give their kids what they want that the word "no" has no meaning. We would say "no" to our kids when they were little and just dealt with the screaming kid being led out of the store not caring who was looking.

$35 for a pair of shoes in today's world is not uncommon. Sketchers is a cool and well known brand name and tend to last a while. I would have the kids use them for school only with the Payless ones for after school and playing. I always made them change when they got home from school from their school shoes or clothing and put the old stuff on them. Unfortunately, that is more difficult when they become teens but by then if you work with your kids, they know the meaning of a dollar by that time.

                            I am so thankful for:

                            1) The fact that my soon-to-be 9 year old daughter still likes Payless and Target shoes. When she does see something she "wants" but doesn't "need", I tell her no, we don't have the money right now. She knows I can't do it and won't push it because I will become "The Mean Mommy"; and

                            2) Every August she goes to stay with my folks for a week and my mom will usually take her out school shopping and get her extra shoes and clothes
