    Thought For The Day

Got this in email today and wanted to share.

OPEC sells oil for $136.00 a barrel.
OPEC nations buy U.S. grain at $7.00 a bushel.

Solution: Sell grain for $136.00 a bushel.

Can't buy it? Tough shit! Eat your oil!
Ought to go well with a nice thick grilled fillet of camel's ass!!!

One problem (besides grains being fungible):

Yeah WhatMoney is right at 136 dollars a bushel you'd be paying about 20x what you do now for anything that takes grain

Next they will be selling oil for $125.00 a barrel - short barrels.

Not if we keep the price of grain $7 a bushel if it stays in the US and offer our OPEC nation friends a "special price" of $136 a bushel.

Unfortunately the world doesn't work like that. The Saudi's would just buy their grains elsewhere at a cheaper price. The price of a commodity like grain is fungible and determined by world market exchanges, not a single country. Meanwhile the farmers would not have a market for their exported grains unless they kept the price at world market levels. Anyway that e-mail was just a silly joke by some bigot that flunked Econ 101. The Saudi's could bring the US down in a second if they wanted to (by selling all the US Treasuries they own and pulling in those 'Sovereign Loans' they've made to failing US banks) - until they run out of oil they have the world by the short hairs.
