What Kind of Anti-Virus Software Do You Use?

Got a nasty virus on my laptop a few days ago. In the past I've used Norton and or Symantic. Now I'm thinking about either Avira or Kasperksy....they are sort of pricey though.

What kind of antivirus do you or have you used?

CNet tested anti-virus programs recently - here's their findings - http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6600_7-...html?tag=prmo1 . Looks like they liked Kasperksy best.

There are FREE anti-virus programs out there - here's a good list - http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/11/d...ction-get.html . None are as strong as a program you pay for, but they work very well for most typical Net users with one email account.

    Hope this helps!

We use McAfee. We also use House Call by Trend Micro. House Call comes free courtesy of our ISP.

TrendMicro Housecall online scanner is free to anyone. Good for an initial cleanup scan but it takes time.

I use TrendMicro PC-cillin to check newly downloaded software, but do not run it resident.

I Like SpyBot also for privacy protection, including Tea Timer, the online resident program for SpyBot. It's good for Trojans, Malware, KeyLoggers, PUPS, and other nasties lurking on web pages and e-mail.

              It is also free:

I've had Norton for years and have never had any trouble and I continue to use Norton today. I just recently bought Norton 360.

Along with that, I also use a Software called System Mechanic. It's avaliable at Best Buy. It's a great software tool for cleaning up your hard drive, removing debris and garbage and it gets rid of privacy violations and viruses. It has Deep Clean options that go deeper into the hard drive than the Windows Disk Defrag and Disk Clean-up will go. System Mechanic keeps your system operating like it did the very first time you turned on the computer. You can also load the software onto 3 systems.

I've used McAfee for years and have never had any problems. I also use a paid version of Lavasoft for spyware removal, with excellent and consistent results.

The single virus I've gotten in 13 years of online usage was before I had any kind of virus software --- when I opened an attachment that looked like it had been sent by someone I knew. HIS computer was infected and the virus replicated and sent itself with a fake message to everyone in his buddy list. It was a password stealer. Fortunately my son who is a computer whiz was able to find the virus and eradicate it from DOS mode almost immediately after I noticed it. I then changed all my passwords, got McAfee and Lavasoft, and have had no problems since.

Three computers, Norton on mine and my youngest son, McAfee on the middle kids system. Whatever they start with I just renew the subscriptions.

AVG (FREE!) and Avast (FREE!) are the ones we've used on the various comps we've had over the past several years. no problems, and I have researched tech geek forums and reviews and many IT nerds will say the free ones like those are often higher rated in many ways than the ones that cost big bucks. anytime we've gotten a new comp, first step during set up is uninstall all the Norton/Symantec trial verison crap and download AVG or Avast.
