      Michigan unemployment is 9.3%.
Or did someone already say that?

That went up about 2% in one year. That is a lot.

I am not too worried about a depression. I have plenty of things stocked up for survival for a couple of years. I mean, I feel like I have done the best I can to not get caught with my pants down and I suppose that does not mean a whole lot, but at least I accept worse case scenario with no problem.

Almost as funny as Sheriff justice walking out with the roll of toilet paper still stuck on him. LOL

            Yes you did.

New Years Eve is fast approaching. So are the Honey Mooner marathons. Thank goodness for TiVo.

How to survive the Great Depression of 2008 - 2009

A hurricane is hitting our shores right now, a large financial hurricane. I use the term hurricane to point out some failures and reactions. Our leaders saw this hurricane coming through the last 8 years. They ignored it. So did all the 'experts' in the banking and credit industry. They made no plans for it hitting us and no plans for recovering from this hurricane. It is no different than Katrina. The levees broke, towns were destroyed, and the recovery plan started with a bunch of officials flying over the damage wondering what to do.
So it will be with this financial hurricane. The political and financial leaders did not prepare for the storm. They have no recovery plan and will not know what to do until the storm passes.
Where are you in this storm? Doing the same thing you would be doing in a regular hurricane, holding onto your family and praying to make it through. Just as in a regular hurricane, you have no control over what is happening. The whirlwind financial fallout is out of your hands and the hands of our leaders. We have to ride it out and see what it looks like in mid 2009 when the storm passes.
We are 'in the moment' and all you can do is hold on to your cash and pray.

[QUOTE=madyus;343344]In 2008 and 2009 I suggested to people to sell their homes immediately and to rent. I told them the prices of homes were not true, they were not real. I implored them and even wrote a few articles about the coming land bust.

It was a bit worse than I thought it would be. No other TV, online writer, or business entity was even in the ballpark back then. My articles were correct and the bust started in 2006, shortly after the last article. At the time I wrote those pieces, people were standing in line for days to buy a condo.

(active advertising link removed by moderator--forum rules.)

I knew the housing market would crash in late 2005. That's exactly why I sold my house at the time and made a nice profit. Weeks later i heard people had problems selling or it would take months. I sold mine in 3 days.

Do y'all really see it as a depression or becoming a depression? I've been fortunate enough to know all of my great grandparents who lived through the 30s depression, and they told stories about things that seem unreal even in this economy: putting cardboard inside of their shoes when they got holes, supper coming at all because a rabbit got unlucky; money just being non-existant-- people just bartered for what they needed.

Do you see it as THAT bad or getting that bad?
Pay no attention to anything I post. I graduated last in my class from a fly-by-night law school that no longer exists; I never studied or went to class; and I only post on internet forums when I'm too drunk to crawl away from the computer.

                        MSBK,

I see us at the beginning of something similar but with, perhaps, father reaching implications. I think we are on a razor edge right now and it could go either way. If the people of this country (USA) come to understand how deeply we are in trouble, all bets are off. If strategic defaults (which we are doing) become common-place, I think national disaster will follow.

But, it could be healthy, too. Then, we might see the true capitalism model at work. Government, my opinion, has artificially propped up certain sectors that should have already failed. Of course it would have been painful.

Our current (in)action has simply kicked the can down the street for a decade or two, directly into our kids' hands. I do not envy them.

To be clear, I believe we will see a long-term, serious, depression. One to rival or surpass that of the 30's. We are preparing accordingly. We have mustered the troops, and will have 3 generations living under one roof on a half acre property with room for a garden. We will be able to be self-sustaining.

We also have friends and neighbors who believe the same. They will be providing chickens, eggs, beef, and so on, all on barter. We will provide vegetables, general labor, and a few specialty skills that I know.

It sounds unreal. It sounds impossible. And, with luck, it will not come to pass. I used to LAUGH at people who suggested such outcomes. I always got a kick out of the nutcases stockpiling ammo and guns in Utah and Idaho (or anywhere). Now, I am one, I guess.

I will also add, among my circle of friends, who are almost entirely professionals (accountants, attorneys, doctors, and so on), about 60% are voicing the same concerns. Most of them, though, are unprepared. They believe it is possible, but somehow, they don't think it will affect them personally. Maybe. I suspect it is wishful thinking.

If the bricks tumble, we will see a great equalizer in action. I hope to God they dont fall, but we are preparing for the worst.

Good luck to all, we may need it.

I think I am going to move out to some uninhabited island out in the South Pacific where I will build a grass shack, catch fish, ferment sugar cain, and live like Robinson Crusoe till this has passed. Y'all send a boat for me when it's over.

If you are going to a South Pacific island you better be prepared to spend some money. First off places like Tahiti are some of the most expensive places to live on the planet. Just getting there will take thousands, then you have to purchase some land that is very expensive. Then you will need electricity which is 800 or so month. Since you are not native you will need to pay someone to protect you, unless you are living in a hotel for 250.00 per night. Your best bet is to buy some land in your area, like 50 miles outside Jackson. Grow some pecans, turnip greens and blackeyed peas and sell some spanish moss to East Coast Martha Stewart types that still have their progressive heads in the sand. I think some people will be poor like your grand parents but even in the last depression not everyone was starving. If you have a job and most people did, you will be ok. Those out of work will be hurting and leaning on charities to get through until the new currency is in place and trust comes back. See you in 2018-2020.

I see nothing pretty ahead for this country. Quite frankly I do believe we have lost it... even the illusion of 'freedom' is rapidly disappearing.
Industries were allowed to 'pack it in'/move out years ago... and with them started the beginning of the end...

I could not have a more pessimistic outlook, and have no faith in any of our political, corrupt, lying, cheating, SOB representatives.

More 'sellout' is ahead. Creditor countries are sure to tell us in no uncertain terms where the bear 's..^%$#'.

'This place' looks more and more like the former East Germany...

With unemployment climbing, as a senior citizen I am wondering where my future Social Security checks will come from...
but, it looks as though our fearless leaders have that covered too, by simple cutting and/or denying future medical care...
actually I believe that all of this will result into the type atmosphere in which the younger generations will want to know when I intend to 'check out'...maybe, a sort of 'good bye celebration' (similar to birthday parties) will be an acceptable part of the future...certainly that trend is already in the works, and promoted by 'Big Brother'.

I just know that the push for further gun control is on the horizon, and that I'll be dammned before I give up my right to own a gun...

By the way, we are gathering seeds to be able to plant 'victory gardens'...

Actually, "this place" is looking more and more like Mexico or a third world country. The real crisis is going to be in the cities. All it takes is for a couple of things to go wrong and millions of people could have a real crisis on their hands.

Our entire governmental structure and monetary system is nothing more than a house of cards.
