Did anyone watch Saturday night fights MMA? What do you think?

I was just flipping through the stations Saturday and stopped on the fight. I do NOT have cable so this was just one of the regular stations.
I was horrified as I watched because it was so brutal. Of course I continued to watch because I wasnt convinced it was 'real' blood etc.
Sure enough its real. They call it MMA mixed martial arts. I thought it was hyped like wrestling yet way more gorey than boxing. I figured that someone was going to die!
My 12 year old had the tv on in the living room and was yelling to me " did you see that Mom?" I made him shut it off!

I know there are probably huge differences in opinion on this but mine as a mother and one who struggles to teach my boys that violence is not glamorous and definately not cool, thinks this garbage should go back 'underground' as they say.

Whats next? Real life death matches because this is really close!

A study by Johns Hopkins University concluded, "the overall injury rate [excluding injury to the brain] in MMA competitions is now similar to other combat sports [involving striking], including boxing. Knockout rates are lower in MMA competitions than in boxing. This suggests a reduced risk of traumatic brain injury in MMA competitions when compared to other events involving striking."[31] (from wikipedia)

I just read that about MMA a few minutes ago. I google everything

Its hard to believe though after having watched it. Then again that study really doesnt have a lot of striking sports to compare it to. Boxing is the only one I can think of.

Just watching the news at night you hear about violent fights that result in death. For someone who knows nothing about this 'style' of fighting it really just looked like violent blows to the brain and kidneys.
I mean how can being punched with a fist over and over and over again in the head be okay?

You sound like my wife........lol. I guess we all view things very differently. I consider myself to be a very conservative person, and I watch very closely what my young children watch. Now I agree I wouldn't let my young children watch it either. After personally being involved with wrestling for several years, I think its a great sport. These guys fight in a organized arena, there is medical help there, and referee's watching over it all. This is how some of these guys make a living. When the fight is over they shake hands and congratulate each other, no hard feelings. In a mans world, the pecking order is pretty quickly decided.
In my opinion, watching something like Survivor is worse then MMA. The participants continually are deceitful, they are continually picking on the weakest or the one that gets on everybody nerves. When your watching that, its hard to explain to your children why the honest person doesn't win. I just can't stand to sit there and watch something like this, people whining and conniving. I understand its a game, but still honesty is not rewarded.
Men and women are different and think totally different...lol. Just for me it doesn't bother seeing two men duke it out, then shake hands afterwords, rather than to see people lieing, stealing, cheating, being dishonest, and then get rewarded for it.
Thats just my 2 cents! Have a great day!

The MMA fighters do a TON of training. Their cardio capabilities are beyond phenomenal. They do training and conditioning and know the right way to absorb some of the kicks and punches.

An untrained person would have to be nuts to climb into the octogan with a trained fighter--now that would be a death wish. However, just like boxing, these dudes spend hours and days and weeks and months in training.

Kimbo Slice had an interesting story as he was originally a homeless man who was offered some money to fight and look at him now. They said he was making at least 6 digits the other night. I didnt hear what six digits but I imagine its pretty substantial.

Arent there women who do this as well? I didnt see that part but on the MMA website it shows a couple of 'manly' females who must have fought before I turned on the TV.

To me MMA is not shocking, its a great enjoyable sport to the trained athlete.
To me CRAZY is being 100lbs overweight, drinking, smoking, high-blood pressure, and eating at McDonalds.........lol

MMA is the only thing that makes me smile any more. It is the greatest sport on the planet. Gina Carano is smoking hot and she kicks ass (literally) and Kimbo Slice is a machine. I love the sport and you should totally let your kids watch it! Kimbo is a street fighting super sensation that has finally been put at a level that he is challenged. he barely won that fight and if he continues he will only be challenged even harder. If you can watch his fights and not feel sympathy pains when he hits someone, you are heartless!!!! Viva la MMA!! And now a link to see Kimbo tackle someone for a $100!!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I personally am not a Kimbo Slice fan, I will be really glad to see him be put up against another real fighter. I never did get a kick out of seeing him show up in a parking lot somewhere and beat up some sorry sap. Most of these guys had no clue what they were getting into. I think he will get spanked when he fights somebody descent. One more reason why I like the MMA arena.

                        Manly????????? Did I miss something?

I don't see her as "manly" far from docile but we have to give credit where credit is due... And yes, this is Saturday night's MMA winner.

I agree that Kimbo will eventually get his ass handed to him but I honestly don't think it will be soon. He is now training with some of the best MMA fighters and if he ups his cardio to a respectful level I think he will definitely be a contender. I think he will take the sport to whole new levels of dirty. I respect ambition and he definitely has something to prove. Honestly, if they keep talking about Kimbo vs. Mike Tyson in the MMA I will be the first in line to see that. Dennis...... Tell me you would not watch that!!

Well, I guess everyone has their own opinion on MMA, but I consider it a great sport that isn't violent. Just my opinion
I used to box and did a little wrestling at the gym and loved the competition and respected the other guys I went against, and they respected me. You usually see guys hug or at least shake hands after each MMA fight because it is a sport and they respect that. I don't know, I guess being on a main network channel, its bound to upset some people. But knowing how to fight and the patience it teaches you (along with building confidence) is good self defense in this day and age.

Just to say btw, I'm a Kimbo fan because of his ruthless pursuit on guys in bare knuckle straight out punch fights. He reminds me a lot of Tyson when he first started, although Kimbo is a lot older. But I give him credit for stepping up his game and going MMA and trying. He'll need at least a few more good years of consistent training before he is ready for some of the upper guys of MMA. But on bare knuckle straight out punching matches, I would bet on him at least giving a top MMA a run for his money. He's stepped into their ring and has issued challenge after challenge for anyone to step into his. I'll admit, i didn't like him that much after the 3rd or 4th fight I saw him do (when he was first getting popular on viral video) because he was talking so much trash, but he delivers defeats.

Your photos are not manly but I see them as probably very 'touched up'. Her nose doesnt even look broken!

Here are a couple of example of what I meant by manly, Even touched up this girl looks MANLY

This one here looks like she cleans up nice but you can still see the manliness about her

*** I couldnt figure out how to get a picture to show here so I just put the address...

I also noticed that they use the term Extreme Combat
