    Forum advertisments

I hesitate to say anything about the google ads now showing up in the threads since this forum is free for me to use. But, it does seem that some of the advertisments could do people a disservice by steering them toward unsound financial practices. For example, one advertised link was for payoffymycard.com which is for a service that farms out your contact info to 4 different debt consolidation companies. I hate to think of people getting taken in by those types of companies. This is an awesome forum, and I apologize if I'm out of line here.

Since all advertising is approved by the owner of this forum I'm sure that he/she has checked them out throughly. I'm sure he/she would want nothing advertised that would destroy all of his hard work in making this a successfull forum for many years.

There are many options to people except filing bankruptcy. Many do not have enough debt to really file bankruptcy and have other options open to them. Some can solve the problem by consolidating their bills into one payment. Some can lower their debts thru settlements with the companies.

All advertising is different options, different articles to read, etc.... It is up to the individual member whether they want to look into these other options or not.

My policy on the forum is "if it sounds too good to be true" - BEWARE!!!

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

Nope...I've personally inquired about how the Ads are now within posts. My inquiry was more geared toward how they make it somewhat difficult to read posts though. I'd be the majority of internet Ads myself. lol The forum does need to make some money to pay for upgrades, server/hosting fees. And I'm presuming the forum owner gets a tad bit more money for offering Ads within posts.

I'm probably being oversensitive about those types of ads because I've been burned before. I certainly understand the need to fund this website. I belong to another forum where the owner had a paypal link set up to make donations for those who chose to. I made a small donation there a while ago and would be happy to do the same here if something like that was set up. Not saying this could or should replace the ads. Just a thought.

Well, you can only limit the ads so much. Obviously google is placing the content specific adds, and you have only limited control. Granted, probably most of the ads this site are useless, but we can't get rid of every bk or debt related ad

You can do what I do - not just on this site but on ALL sites - and just completely ignore the ads. I don't even see them, I just pretend they aren't there. I know, I am not helping these sites make money through click throughs... But I really hate intrusive ads so I just ignore them.

I don't mind the ads (and totally understand why the owner is doing it) as long as they don't reveal information about me. For example, while posting a minute ago, one of the ads had my state in it. Not really digging that if others can see, kwim?

You're all so cool. Excuse me a moment while I put my ad blinders on. Ahhh... that's better.

You know when I first started coming on this forum I noticed the ads, not enough to bother me but I noticed them. Then I think I just started blocking them out or something, because I forgot about them until I read this post. So they must not be too bad. Whatever it takes to keep this forum up and running is fine with me. Without this forum right now I wouldn't really have anyone to talk to about BK, this forum simply makes my life much more bearable when it comes to going thru what we are right now!!

                  Thank you all!

Funny, I don't see these ads you all are talking about. Maybe it's because my hosts file contains this line:

                    127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com

which I guess has been there all the time.

I just noticed the same thing as to the state relating to me but it is for a state for which I have the same initials in my email attaching me to this site upon signing/joining. I do not live in the state matching those letters so I am wondering if it is just a coincidence or if something else is utilized to place those ads to correspondence to you personally. Can someone answer that?

Now I just received an ad corresponding to the state in which I reside after I posted the above. It appears there is a cookie link and is more than coincidence. I am going to ask my hubby about this since he is a computer guru (former UNIX engineer). I believe I already know what he is going to tell me...

Each of our computers have an IP adress that is unique, it's kind of like a telephone number. When your computer requests a web page, it identifies itself using its IP Address.

Just like a telephone number, the IP Address of your computer tells each website a little bit about where you are. In fact, your IP adress identifies your Internet Service Provider who can, in turn, identify you.

So, Google is smart enough to look at the destination for the ads it sends and sends you ads that are relavant for your area.

For those who are interested, the link below goes to a website that will give you a nice little report that includes the IP address you're at and what they know about it including your City and State.

Discharged November 2008 100 days after filing no-asset Chapter 7. We intended to let a two-year-old vehicle go back to the bank and reaffirm an inexpensive ten-year-old SUV and our home mortgage. In the end we surrendered ALL of our vehicles and reaffirmed NOTHING. We'll "ride through" our mortgage after the court ruled it an undue hardship.

I don't mind them for the most part, but the one that's in the actual post that is yellow and has a cartoon guy with his eyes rolling around and says are you kept up at night about debt, it's annoying.

The rolling eyes make it hard to read.
