Employment Verification? Who is this weirdo?

The last two days some guy has called my job twice a day asking if I work there. He (mystery man) never identifies himself and has his number blocked and it cannot be called back.

My boss has it (mystery line) forwarded to his phone & has told the guy "Until you identify yourself there will be no answers to your questions and that technology works just as good on this end as it does on his end" meaning we can find out who is calling if he does not stop it...

The guy never asks to speak to me directly rather just asks if I work there. I work nights so I could never take the day call anyway.

The same thing happened about 8 months ago. I am not late on any payments & the only thing I applied for lately was a cellphone which I was already approved for.
My boss is starting to get sick of it in just two days because the phones stay too busy to be dealing with that.

What do you think it is about? Anyone ever have that happen before?
    Any ideas?

Do you have any judgements against you where they could garnish your wages??

I'm like you guys, if he can't say who he/she is, "get the H off the phone....."

    Keep us posted.

If the guy is not telling you who he is, what company he's with and is blocking his phone number, I'd treat it as a harassing phone call. You can report harassing telephone calls to your local phone company. There is usually a procedure outlined in your telephone books, and each state has its own laws. -- well, it's an idea anyway.

I also work nights, and have these guys call and leave messages during the day. I have told my supervisors, and the people on the day shift what is going on, and to just take a message. (Manager also went BK so he dosen't care). Our company policy is that no one is allowed to give any information over the phone (other phone numbers etc...). My only problem is that the poor PDX operator ends up sending the calls to an ex manager of mine who is now in a different department.

My boss knows about my accident and financial problems also but like you he does not care. It is like a harrassing phone call. It makes me feel like someone is stalking me But with stalkers you usually know who it is.

But different from you, I have not entered a BK or anything like that. I am wondering though because I had a lot of charges over the last few months due to medical problems and....maybe someone is watching that.

I feel a little better knowing someone else is being stalked. Do you think we will ever find out who is doing it? Or will it just stop eventually?

No. Nothing like that. NO garnisments are possible because I am not behind on anything. He refuses to say who he is or who he is with. My boss told him that we can find out who he is and said, "Oh.", then hung up. The other 3 times my boss hung up on him...but he kept calling back.

I will pass that on. Good advice. I just think it is odd that he does not want to talk to me & just wants to know if I work there.

Who in the world would do that but not identify who they are?

The next time he calls, have your boss or whoever answer the phone that due to privacy laws, names of employees cannot be given out over the phone. The request has to be in writing from a verifiable company. The person is apparently trying to send you something or get you on the phone directly. Be careful.

Thanks, I think that is what my boss told him once but that did not stop the freaky man from calling back. I have a feeling there is going to be a whole bunch of weirdos in my life this year. My self esteem is so low right now and I am very vulnerable. He never asks for me directly, which is the part that freaks me out like being stalked.

I was thinking the same thing though about them trying to send me something, like something that I never asked for. I have also been getting tons & tons of applications from every bank on the planet to get new/more credit cards and I never asked or applied so maybe that is it?

OK, this thought just popped into my head. Have you checked your credit report lately to make sure no unusual things are showing up, that don't belong to you maybe?

I did check it about 2 months ago & everything was perfect but that was the first & only time I have ever looked at it in my entire life. I also have a lot of debt in just 6 months time from medical problems being off of work and all that goes with it. I just bought a health insurance plan & and still waiting for approval on that, but wouldn't they reveal themselves if they were to call my job?

I was just thinking that someone wants to make sure I am still working or have I skipped town? But why they would not reveal it, is probably what I should look at.

It has to be someone who knows where I work first of all...Why would someone want to know if I am still employed but not reveal who they are? iT is kind of scary because I just wonder if this happens to very many people & they never find out who the mystery man calling is, & just shrug it off.

I would think if it were collections or a Bank I would have to be late or behind on something...and there are machines to change someones voice.

My other thought is, someone hires someone else to be undercover so to speak- stranger things have happened. You know?

You are right though- it could be something thru the credit reports because that stuff bores me to all get out & I do not keep up with it, never have & never want to.

If we all look back we can see how many forms or informational material we fill out which lists our contact information. Who knows how many people/places have your work number. The only things you can do about the calls are ignore them or contact local authorities as to possible harassment since you really cannot prove what the calls are about but they are continual and annoying to you and your employer.

That is a weird situation to be in. It show how easy our personal info can be found.

I think it should be recorded and reported. The police can tap a phone line and/or request records from phone companies. If he were from a company that had anything to do with trying to get you for a bill, he'd say who he was and where he's from... sometimes though they don't want to do that because they know you won't call back but they'll leave a phone number for you to call back. I've NEVER heard of a collector/otherwise hanging up when someone says they can find out where the caller is from. Sounds like a stalker or some weirdo - maybe an ex boyfriend???

Either way, watch out for yourself, especially since you work nights, make sure you don't walk alone to your vehicle and make sure there is an outside light on when you get home. And, I know it sounds stupid, but check out the backseat of your car before you hop in.... you never know. Hopefully, you don't live any place secluded but because he's calling to see if you work there, I'd be especially careful at work. Are there several others that you work with or is it just a few people?

Think for a second how he could find out where you work... does he see your employer name anywhere? Newspaper, myspace, etc. You could have a stalker from that too, you know?

Thanks for the notes all. No one called to day so I think my boss nipped it. Yes it is weird.

Someone did call my house today from the hospital trying to get me to pay more & get on their payment plan terms or it will go to collections. eh.

So I am wondering if it was someone in disguise from the hospital that was calling work? because I have not heard from anyone else.
