Thanks, but I still don't get it. Is it to prevent some sort of ID theft? I just don't see the point, but I'm probably making a bigger deal out of it than I should be.

TTA and Kreilly, in using TurboTax for the last eight years or so, they always wanted to know my previous tax return's AGI, and stated that it was to determine that I was the actual acct holder. I'm pretty sure that it's also part of the way the IRS verifies your ID for efiled returns. Back in the day when efiling was still in its infancy (before the IRS figured out that, duh, it would be to their benefit as well as the taxpayer's, and so you did your returns online but then printed them out and sent them) both the tax preparers and the IRS were trying to figure out a way to secure the process (not just ID fraud but from all directions) and so there were two or three years in there where there was a slightly different process involved each time. They seem to have settled on AGI to both verify previous users of the specific system for the company that hosts the site, and to satisfy the IRS's need to ensure that the person filing for that TIN is actually that person. So the AGI is, by default, *the previous return's* AGI.

Now how that washes out for people who did not file any return for the previous tax year, I honestly have no idea. But that's my understanding of why they need which year's AGI and for what. Good luck!!!
Nolo Press book on filing Chapter 7, there are others too. (I have no affiliation with Nolo Press; just a happy customer.) Best wishes to you!

epiph, I'm in South Florida and BELIEVE me that is peanuts down here in every sense of the word, we still have to stretch things. Here that is NOT A BRAG in any way, it is somewhat average and that's how I meant it. With HO insurance being shoved at me for $7500 a year and property taxes way up we have to stretch dollars. A pound of vine ripe tomatoes in Publix or Winn Dixie here is $4.49, gasoline at my corner Shell is $3.48 per gallon. Sorry if it came off as "in your face" that wasn't my intent. If you are under 150k here you are likely struggling if you are in a middle class area, everyone has to work. When only one son, my oldest got his license AIG raised my Insurance to $9200 per year so my other boys are 18 and 19 with LEARNERS PERMITS! Now that the oldest is in school in New Jersey they brought it to a reasonable? $3000.00 per year. I typically carry no cash (discipline, check card only) and I probably struggle more than some in Rural areas making 40 grand.

I feed THREE TEENAGERS, one has to eat in another State and live there and has classes six days and therefore cannot work, he is in a rural area. He will be a CPA in the end after he completes this school or I will beat him with all of those expensive damned books!

I just got notice that Citizens wants to move me from the State Insurance to a $7500 policy with Homewise, Homespun or Home-something-or -other fly-by-night Ins. co. at 7500 per year, a hefty increase from my 3000.00 per year today. For that $7500 I insure a 1400 sq. ft. townhome. It is improving but it is still costly here, plus for that money I did ONE HELL of alot of OT and did not typically get to spend Holidays with my family for over 20 years until my seniority alowed it. The benefits, retirement and pay are great but there has been a trade-off in family time cost that has done some damage, but of course everyone loves the tea and cookies. So please that was in no way a brag, not down here and my salary and my wifes are open public record so divulging them is no great secret, we go by pay grade not just by merit. My chief supervisor makes $52.00 per hour, his boss $62.00 per hour, my immediate Supervisor 43.11 per hour (he is Union also). It is all Public Record and I see it from my computer at will. To us it is no big secret, we all know what everyone makes and even Mortgages are readable online.

Back to taxes... I have no choice but to tighten my belt and defer a portion otherwise the taxes would be brutal. Also until the wife went back to work I was paying about $6500 for medical, salary, legal, 6X salary Life, Dental and vision Insurances from my pocket. All of those were pre-tax plus I put another 2600.00 per year in a Medical FSA for eyeglasses, co-pays and other medical expenses, I am an expert on what can be covered under that. It covered three sets of braces and root canals up the ying yang, with the Dental
the Crown and say Tri root canal still run about $550.00 and i have a mouth full of them. IF I did not deffer a protion of my salary the taxes would likely exceed 12000.00 per year, easy.

I use H&R Block on-line tax prep where Federal with e-File is free. I don't pay State Income Tax so I don't need to pay for that service.

Every year I get an e-mail with a link to file again for free and I've e-Filed free for three or four years now.

I've shared the link with other people and they've been able to e-File for free too!

If you e-file your return and get it accepted by the IRS before 11:00AM on Thursday, you get your refund deposited a week later on Friday.

The AGI figure from the previous year and sometimes a PIN number are used as a form of security instead of having you sign the return.
Discharged November 2008 100 days after filing no-asset Chapter 7. We intended to let a two-year-old vehicle go back to the bank and reaffirm an inexpensive ten-year-old SUV and our home mortgage. In the end we surrendered ALL of our vehicles and reaffirmed NOTHING. We'll "ride through" our mortgage after the court ruled it an undue hardship.

Well, I used Turbo-Tax's Tax Freedom. It was Okay. The only problem was that I work in one state which is "$9.95" and live in another which is "free." Turbotax only takes as payment Debit or credit cards. I just basically cancelled my whole bank account and no longer use my credit card. I just decided to put the states on hold and get an account with a debit card. Then I can pay them. They do not tell you up front which payment types they will accept. I looked. I thought at least they would take pay-pal. Expect it.

I had to take $2K out of my SEP last year in order to move. If I use TurboTax, which version would include the 1099 for that?

I just figured it out. Did one of my co-workers on the free turbo & they have a place for the 1099 redemption included! Cool!

I did the free turbo last year & it was so easy!

According to the pamphlet they sent me this year, even the basic turbotax will import w-2 info and 1099 info.
If you use the online versions, you can always upgrade easily. Last year we started with Turbotax deluxe, and I ended up upgrading to Premier because of some stock. I have never bought the software they sell for taxes, I have always gone online and done it from there. This will be my 3rd year to use turbotax. They even store my employer info from year to year, so all I have to do is adjust the amounts. Very helpful with DH, as his w-2s come from 5 different accounts.

yeah, when I got my post posted, yours showed up too.

Man, TurboTax rocks. I have been dreading tax time since this summer. I had some stock from the hospital corp that used to own us. We were bought out in july and those of us that had stock were sent checks for our shares of stock. No choice, no way to keep it, as the stock no longer exists on the exchange. I really needed that money, so spent it. I knew it would be a pain to do taxes. This thread inspired me to get off my can and at least try TT before I called an accountant. Man oh man, the premier edition-- It walked me through the whole ordeal of purchase date/price/grant date/price/offering period etc, etc. etc. And to my joy, the stock sale taxation only took away $130 of our refund amount. I had been expecting it to be more like 5-600$.

addition: evidently I can buy one boxed state, and that will allow me to pay here and not pay online. I guess this is better.

Actually I did think it was kind of "in my face" but I just re-read your post and have to admit that I misread it. I didn't read it as a brag, I thought that
"Looking for Turbotax to start "last second reporting"! I don't get refunds!!! YOWWWW!!!!!" was a slam directed at the audience (like we were doing something wrong) but you were talking about yourself! So, I am a big girl and I apologize.
